Hey, I bought this pc a couple of year back from some crappy company, which put it together etc, back before I knew anything about hardware, and in the time between then and now, I've learned how to put a computer together, and as such was looking to salvage the good bits from my pc, while dumping the rubbish ones.
So! Specs of current PC!
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
Nvidia Geforce GTX 260
Mobo: ASUS, M2A-VM - must drop this, as it's got a 64 bit compatibility issue
Case: Generic Stock case, poor ventilation, tendancy to become very dusty
PSU: Coolermaster 520W, I'm buggered if I have to find the exact detail as it's inside the thing
Network Card: Realtek RTL8168B/8111 family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
RAM: Corsair DDR2 2x2Gb RAM
CD/DVD: Generic DVD/CD RW device, no intention of changing it
HDD: Seagate 500 Gb, looking to replace
Anyway, some parts are worth keeping, other's maybe less so, so if anyone would like to offer helpful advice fore someone with a £500 ish budget, though preferably less, I'd appreciate it
Looks like you already have a pretty good PC, The only real weak spot is the proccesor and even that is not that bad.
edit
you could get a Phenom II and a new mobo.
I'm thinking that I might want to get a 64 compatible mobo and then possibly a RAM upgrades, 8 gig DDR3 would be useful, but with a 32 bit system it would be pointless. Also still looking for possible case improvements?

You don't need more than 4gb for anything except workstations, and DDR3 doesn't provide any performance increases in gaming.
Thank you for the helpful advice, I was under the impression that DDR3 had better OCing capability
Nah, you'll get better OCs from DDR2 1066.

However at 800 you can get CAS timings of 4. No stock RAM at 1066 can get that low.
Or get a i7 with a compatible Mobo and 6gb ddr3 ram in triple channel.... the graphics card is fine.....
If you want to stick with nVidia graphics get a EVGA, if not any other i7 mobo is fine

it does as long as you can get low cas
Sorry, could someone explain precisely what cas is?
Taken from wiki
CAS (column address strobe) latency (CL) is the delay time which elapses between the moment a memory controller tells the memory module to access a particular column in a selected row, and the moment the data from given array location is available on the module's output pins.
In english: It's the amount of time (in milliseconds) that it takes for the RAM stick to address and make a available a part of your RAM.
