For the non-Dota Crowd The International is an annual tournament hosted by Valve Software for their action real time strategy game 'Dota 2' where 16 of the finest teams from across the world compete against each other for the world championship, massive prize pool that this thread is about and all the glory in the world.
Valve seeds $1.6 Million USD as the prize pool of the event with the Dota 2 community having the opportunity to add to the prize pool by purchasing the 'Interactive Compendium'. For every Compendium purchased, 25% ($2.50) of the sales are added to the prize pool of the event.
The Interactive Compendium this year was launched on May 9, 2014 and the Dota 2 community have purchased enough of them until today to have boosted the prize pool to over $10,000,000 technically adding over 5 times the base prize pool to the event.
TL;DR - $10 Million Dollars and more. 16 finest Dota Teams. July 18-21. KeyArena, Seattle. Do tune in so you can tell your kids you caught it live before it was cool.
Thanks, wyhrkm.
Daaaaaaaaaamn.
That's a prize impressive prize, whoever wins will better not waste it.
It´s almost a million per player of the winning team.

If the prizepool will be given as it was before.
Win and you're set for life probably

Axe body pillow?
I would pay for that.
A Drow Ranger body pillow?
A Drow Ranger body pillow for every purchase of that cat ear set
I hope more prize money is given to some of the lower placing teams this year to make the distribution more fair

Taxes|team management|prize pool for second and third place probably. It won't be a 10mil prizepool in the end, but it's still going to be bloody impressive for an e tournament.
I for one, am proud to have added to the prize pool a grand total of $2.50
I dunno, i think valve payed for the taxes(not even fully sure for that tho).

That's how it was done last year, so this isn't all just for the winners. There was a google doc showing the distribution of it if it's to be done the same as last year.
Can't imagine what kind of pressure this is putting on the players.
You could literally be the one with one missclick which loses you the final.

Following up on what I said before, this is how it'll turn out if it's like last year. The top 3 teams each will go home with over a million USD. GG

I hope they'll distribute it more evenly this time around. Not that second place would go home broke, but in general top-heavy prize pools suck for people trying to make a somewhat consistent living off of esports, and it sucks for event organizers when people throw intentionally because the bets against their team are a more reliable source of income than the still available prizes.
So I hope Valve can use this opportunity to set an example. A lot of eyes and expectations for the future are set on TI's development right now.
insane.

full hype for ti4 though
I wonder if valve can afford localized servers yet
I wonder if valve can afford localized servers yet
Why would you even want that to happen? If anything enforce the language preferences better but I strongly dislike the idea of localized servers. I play up to fifteen games with a pal or two on US east every month or so, and I certainly don't want it to end.

the new matchmaking fixes alot of that.
but forced region locking is bad for a game like this.

There are a ton of ways to have region locking and still allow for cross region play. Biggest example being have region soft locking, making it so you can only play outside of your region if you are a party with somebody from another region.

Localized servers for a free to play game where people can just create a new account and lose virtually nothing of interest other than cosmetics.
Yeah okay.

Valve allegedly pays the taxes. That leaves 5 million and change before sponsor cuts between 5 people.
The winners are looking at in excess of 500-800 thousand USD depending on organization tariffs. For some of the people in some nations, that could easily be more than they would usually make in their lives with a decent income and a "normal" job.
Win and you're set for life probably
If you win, you split the prize between your teammates, so you only take home one million before taxes. That's assuming nobody else takes a cut, which they probably will (manager, team and such). After taxes, is basically enough for a nice house but its hardly "set for life."

Again, Valve apparently pays the tax. IDK how the organization cuts work, but multiple people have said that they pay the taxes on prizes, so if you win a million, you and your organization get a million.

Do you have a source on valve paying the taxes?
Also, multiple people meaning yourself and one guy who isn't sure?
Either way, it's still not enough to retire on really.
i really want to see what happens when a pro gaming team gets given 5 million dollars
