The PM is to introduce a "universal service obligation" for broadband, giving the public a legal right to request an "affordable" connection. It would put broadband on a similar footing to other basic services such as water and electricity. In 2010, the coalition government promised the UK would have the best superfast broadband in Europe by 2015.

Mr Cameron's latest announcement is aimed at ensuring consumers have access to a broadband connection with a speed of at least 10Mbps, no matter where in the country they live or work. "Access to the internet shouldn't be a luxury, it should be a right - absolutely fundamental to life in 21st Century Britain," he said. Mr Cameron, who is expected to set out further details next week, added: "Just as our forebears effectively brought gas, electricity and water to all, we're going to bring fast broadband to every home and business that wants it.
Finally something of use from these worthless tories, I suppose.
Finally something of use from these worthless tories, I suppose.
About time they made themselves useful.
Good, I hope this goes through. Then maybe the US will be next, I hope.
Then, in 2012, a pledge was made by then-Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt that the UK would have "the fastest broadband of any major European country" by 2015.

"We're getting Britain - all of Britain - online, and on the way to becoming the most prosperous economy in the whole of Europe."
Those are a lot of big words.
Good, I hope this goes through. Then maybe the US will be next, I hope.
Ha. We'll get 10Mb no problem, but it'll come with high bills, data caps and no competition
About time they made themselves useful.
Though I suppose it's a bit like a kidnapper giving you a cup of hot chocolate inbetween the daily beatings.
food water shelter internet connection one of these is not like the other
food water shelter internet connection one of these is not like the other
two of these can be consumed two of these can't be consumed
food water shelter internet connection one of these is not like the other
internet connection is needed in this day and age to live in modern society
Ha. We'll get 10Mb no problem, but it'll come with high bills, data caps and no competition
Sounds Comcastic
This is nice and all but this should already be a thing, in fact it should have been a thing a long time ago. BT have been utter shit at upgrading rural internet. We were supposed to get fibre almost two years ago now but they seem to have just given up.
Though I suppose it's a bit like a kidnapper giving you a cup of hot chocolate inbetween the daily beatings.
Too right. You appreciate the cocoa, but it doesn't make the thrashings any less painful or traumatic. No no, the cocktail of drugs that "Momma" slipped into the cocoa is what does that. And it's just as fucked up as it sounds.
Now fix your free speech laws and GG, you guys would win.
food water shelter internet connection one of these is not like the other
Ya shelter shouldn't be a utility
can we trade our right wing parties. please. actually just literally give us them, anyone would be better than ours.
food water shelter internet connection one of these is not like the other
The internet provides the most open forum for free expression and access to uncensored, unbiased information from around the world. You can't get that anywhere else, and that's the difference between an uninformed, complacent, closed-minded and hostile society and an intelligent, free-thinking and prosperous society. The ability for anybody at any time to go onto Wikipedia and read about any topic without the bias of a news agency filtering what they read has affected our civilization in unmeasurable ways and without it we'd be decades behind where we are socially. Despite what you might think the internet isn't just a tool for porn and cat videos.
can we trade our right wing parties. please. actually just literally give us them, anyone would be better than ours.
The lesser evil is still evil, believe me. Though I won't deny, I'd rather have the pigfucker we have than some of the people vying for power in America.
food water shelter internet connection one of these is not like the other
you pretty much cannot get a job these days if you don't at least have an email address, and if you can't reply to emails re. your job search in a timely fashion you're a goner. Add to that the fact that more and more business are dropping their postage and going direct to email and the internet does become a necessity
All the better for spying on you
Most bank shit is digital, the town I live in used to have two when I was born now there are none. If I want to go the bank I will have to go to another village and all they have is a few computers that you can use to do your banking online. Hey at least it has a guy there to assist you.
Dun kno. They closed my bank branch without telling me. I went there one day and it was a Subway (I ended up eating a foot long melt rather than deposit a cheque in the end). Whenever I fill a form that asks for my bank branch I'm always like "I dunno it don't exist anymore"
1mbps has been a legal right here since like 2010, was supposed to be 100/100 by now.
I don't even get 0.8mbps during the day. I fucking dare them to fix it.
can we trade our right wing parties. please. actually just literally give us them, anyone would be better than ours.
Our right wing parties are still left wing by American standards, the US Democrats are still more right wing than the British conservative party.
food water shelter internet connection one of these is not like the other
This isn't about basic human necessities, which is why electricity is even mentioned in the thread title.
Ha. We'll get 10Mb no problem, but it'll come with high bills, data caps and no competition
and no encryption :v
Having an upload speed above 1mbps should also be a basic human right
food water shelter internet connection one of these is not like the other
yeah shelter is almost completely undefinable
This is on top of the government's existing target to get superfast broadband (24Mbps+) to 95% of properties by 2017. The current number is somewhere in the 80s and rising fast.
