Hello there! I came here to discuss wether Wikileaks was actually right in leaking the "Afghan war diary". First of all, what is the documents all about? Well Timmy, it's the raw logs recording basically everything that happened in the middle east from 2004 to 2009. What's bad about that? You see Timmy, all of these documents (90,000+) are classified, meaning they aren't meant for the public eye. Some of the data is very sensitive, and some are not. I'll give you a couple of examples. One log input records how NATO forces killed 78 enemies, wounded 4 and captured 3 enemies. Sounds pretty heavy, doesn't it? Now on the other end of the scale, a log translating letters that had been shared among the public, urging them to stand up and defend Afghanistan from the US. Not so serious. What's so bad about that? Some of the logs are pretty sensitive and quite frankly, if I were a president, I wouldn't want people to know about how my troops failed to teach the afghan police on how to deal with tense situation, like that time when 2 Afghan police officers killed 2 civilians. Not only is it bad PR, but it strains political ties. Ok, who leaked all of this? The documents are obtainable on the Wikileaks.org homepage. I suggest you all go and see for yourself. In this opening post, I didn't do much discussing with myself, I'm not in a condition to discuss such serious matters right now :v: (Sleep depraved) Here's what I'd love to see from you guys, try to answer the 3 bottom questions I asked myself in this post. And keep a standard. And try to answer this question too; Is it right to leak all of these documents? Feel free to discuss other things related to this.
TORRENT DUMP Please download and seed to keep these documents available. Seeding from my 100mbps VPS.
Is it right to leak all of these documents?
Let me put it this way: it would be wrong not to.
If it contained critical information to the enemy of the US, then yes it would be wrong to leak, however since it seems pretty outdated, maybe not.
They're classified, they may shed light on injustices, but it's illegal whether you like it or not.
The public deserves to know so we can harass the people in charge and make them do a better job
They're classified, they may shed light on injustices, but it's illegal whether you like it or not.
Illegal is often not also immoral. Wow, WL is chugging right now.
People need to know the truth
Illegal is often not also immoral.
That's true, but he had no right to release them, and he'll probably be punished.
If it doesn't put any soldiers or anything at risk I don't see the problem.
How did he acquire all these documents anyway?
People need to know the truth
Wikileaks is retarded
Wikileaks is retarded
it's retarded that somebody is shedding light to all of this things?
If a country fucks up, the people deserve to know that they did and not try and cover it up. That's why I like WikiLeaks.
That's true, but he had no right to release them, and he'll probably be punished.
Heh, no. The source will likely remain anonymous and nobody is going to touch the Wikileaks guy. Besides, they're being responsible about it:
We have delayed the release of some 15,000 reports from the total archive as part of a harm minimization process demanded by our source. After further review, these reports will be released, with occasional redactions, and eventually in full, as the security situation in Afghanistan permits.

Wikileaks is retarded
Please back up your argument if you are going to come with statements like that.
I think of it wrong leaking and not censoring sensitive stuff, stuff like coordinates or orders or names. Anything else seems perfectly fine.
They're just doing what the site was made for. And they say they're redacting any vital info before they're going to release it to any non-press related individuals. The only people who seem to think this is going to endanger anyone is the military branches of the government, and we all know (by now at least) they'll lie out the ass just to cover up anything that makes them look bad (civilian deaths, mostly)
Is the page containing the documents still there
Doesn't matter, the dude who runs Wikileaks doesn't live in the US. Fact is that if it does contain current info, the owner doesn't release it or turns the person in, as he did when he got a shit ton more from the guy who released Collateral Murder.
People leak shit that is important for other people to know. if they started leaking battle formations or locations of high ranking individuals, that would be one thing, but they mostly expose corruption and bullshit like that.
It's a double edged sword. It's kind of fucked knowing that these people can get such sensitive information about the government and release it freely without consequence and get away with it and then it's kind of fucked how the government tries to hide all of this shit that it's done from us in order to maintain its image of trying to be for the people, by the people.

I can tell you the Australian Federal Police are trying to chase his ass, and I'm sure the CIA are too.
Let me put it this way: it would be wrong not to.
Hey look it's Zeke. Anyway, this guy better hide really well.
it's the 21st century, Information is and should remain free
Is the page containing the documents still there
http://wikileaks.org/wiki/Afghan_War_Diary,_2004-2010
It's a double edged sword. I believe it should be released freely, but I understand why they want it classified.
He lives in Australia - but the Aussies are large allies of the US. But my information is probably outdated.
I am neutral on the actual release. People deserve to know the facts, but at the same time I am sure making that information public will hurt the "boys on the ground" in the military. The press reporting is typical liberal bullshit though. Wow we are such a bad country for killing enemy troops with drones and special forces troopers without trial. A trial, for Taliban leaders? Are you fucking serious?
The direct link to the leak is here: http://wardiary.wikileaks.org/
I love how the majority of people claim wiki leaks "sheds light" on these situations when in reality everyone just sits around and bitches on a forum and doesn't do anything else with this enlightening info.
