[B]US defence firm General Dynamics has won a contract to build a new light tank for the British army.

The firm, which plans to manufacture most of the new tank in the UK, beat rival bidder BAE Systems - where 500 jobs will now be lost.
The news is a blow for BAE's factory in Newcastle, which was earmarked to build the company's tank.
General Dynamics claims that the contract will safeguard or create 10,500 jobs in the UK.
The contract is reported to be worth £4bn ($6bn).
General Dynamics said its product was not only the best option, but was a patriotic choice too. [/quote]Well at least they will still be produced, designed and engineered by the British...by the looks of it.

Ooooo lets go tanking insurgents!
Every time I hear "General Dynamics" I think "Global Dynamics"

Surely it's more patriotic to go for BAE Systems considering their origin is the UK...
Actually having said that, if the 10,500 jobs are all in the UK, then it would make sense to go with whatever keeps more UK citizens in work.
My dad complains about General Dynamic often. Apparently, they have a habit of sitting on their asses and doing nothing as the US government throws money at them.
I have a friend who's dead set about going to work for BAE systems. I can tell what he's going to be talking about on the bus tomorrow.

I thought about Datadyne.
This happened in the USA did it not, the air tanker contract got awarded to Aribus initially, then a bunch of Americans got pissed over it being awarded to a non-american company, and then the contract got awarded to Boeing, the American company.
Whats that again USA? Free market?
Well, hopefully what they say will be true, "Engineered and designed by Britain" We know how to make a good tank.
Its not a completely British design. Both the designs for this particularly FRES requirement are foreign. BAE proposed a CV90 modification, and General Dynamics have proposed a modified ASCOD variant. Both were very heavily modified though.
FRES also selected the Piranha V a while back too. The distinct lack of British design in the FRES programme pisses me off tbh. MOD are Penny Pincher's. However, FRES looks like it will be very successful, it is very expensive and is the largest transformation the British Army has ever undergone. And the designs chosen are already successful designs, modified to suit British needs. Modifications include DSTL's ECA and a new turret with a 40mm cannon (also to be fitted to the Warrior) The programme does good for everyone involved (defence contractors/MoD/Army/Economy) apart from Terry Taliban who will be on the receiving end of the new toys :P)
Good to see Britain on the tank front.

Every time I hear "General Dynamics," I think "governing dynamics."
Every time I think governing dynamics, I think Nash equilibrium.
I think Massive Dyamics.

New tank? Thats funny, I have an engine related project coming up this summer to carry out but I'm not allowed to know what it is yet. Could be related, hopes up!
I've been inside a British Aerospace building before.
The guy that makes and replaces parachutes for the F/A-18 gets $900,000 a year.
What animal will it be named after.

And the guy that was taking our group around said "Turn off your mobile phones or we WILL shoot you".
That got my shit scared, and later on i realised he was joking with us...

Almost every British armored fighting vehicle since the Centurion can brew tea!
We'll see how Genera Dynamics will produce the British Army's next armored reconnaissance vehicle. Sometimes I think recon and cavalry are just overlooked in a modern army.
Better than a fucking land-rover aye boys.
