At first I thought it meant a license for surfing the web.
Can't the police in pretty much any modern country check your id using your social security number anyways? So the physical card isn't mandatory even now.

Having only one valid physical card, rather then a SSN that can be everywhere at once, is also important.
Afaik you're not required to have an ID on you at all times in the UK, so you can't piggyback off that anyway.
I like the idea, but how is this going to work for using your ID for entering clubs/buying alcohol etc? There's nothing better than a driving license for ID.

Was thinking the same thing, I'd rather not have my phone stolen by a thief or a bouncer if i've had a drink and need to show my ID.
I'd be interested in knowing how they'd prevent people making fakes, any person can photoshop a real looking license but it takes some skill to make a physical fake, unless there is some kind of verification but I have no idea how they would implement that.
The title made me think of those drivers licenses that you stick into a computer in a car, just like The Fifth element.

I assume it uses RFID, since its in apple passbook.

I'm thinking the same, but the current card doesn't have any RFID chip, or need for it really - plus that would require machines to read/check they are valid. Existing cards just have: holographics, raised lettering, raised surface pattern and optical variable ink feature.

Self checkout at stores for alcohol/tobacco, or replacing 3rd party cards that are only really used for ID purposes, like the cards for clocking in at work and various store/club cards.
Probably not so much for replacing the bouncer at a club or driving without having your card on you. But maybe its useful for ID checks at bigger events? Like the article says its an "add-on"
And in terms of maybe not having to give people/companies scanner/printer copies of your ID, it would be a security improvement.
