Bloggers in China have reacted with outrage to news of an assault on six Chinese students in France's wine-producing Bordeaux region.
Two people were arrested after the drunken attack, in which one student was seriously injured when a glass bottle hit her face, police say.
French Interior Minister Manuel Valls condemned the "xenophobic" attack.
The attack was widely criticised on China's most popular social networking service, Weibo.
One blogger said France's reputation was "damaged" while another said Chinese people should avoid visiting the country.
The students were in France for a year to study oenology. Three people, all of them visibly drunk, were involved in the attack in the village of Hostens, in the Landes region near Bordeaux.
According to French newspaper Sud Ouest, a struggle began when the attackers tried to enter the residence where the students were staying on Friday night.
The attackers had reportedly been drinking outside on a bench during the evening. One witness told the paper, "They could have picked on anyone", but racist insults were reportedly heard during the struggle.
Correspondents say there is resentment among some people in the Bordeaux region at Chinese investors who have been buying up local vineyards.
Particularly at my University.

There's a good chunk of the population who vote for the reactionary, populist extreme-right. Of course, this is inflated by the recent tensions from gay marriage and the worsening of the economy.

France has been known to be particularly hostile towards people with other nationalities.
[editline]16th June 2013[/editline]
And this is not helping.
The Chinese are buying all of our vineyards, act like they know everything about it and ask for it to be more "sugary". I can understand why some people around Bordeaux would be pissed off at them.
This being said, attacking someone who probably has nothing to do with all of this is fucking stupid.

Is this why so many people in USA/UK/Canada hate France?
I seriously never understood the entire deal, this is a honest question.

This is sad that prejudices like that keep going on about the far right wing, all it takes is a visit on their website to read a very detailed program to figure out there's a lot of good things in there.
Hell they're more honest than the left wing and right wing, that's something.

The stereotype is that French people think they're god's gift to the universe, and that everybody not French is inferior.
French people xenophobic? Well I never...
Way to overgeneralize

We got crushed during WWII and are seen as surrendering faggots "til then, Roosevelt never considered De Gaulle's France, and more recently we refused to join the Iraqi War.
The UK likes us I think, they're our neighbors we keep criticizing but still love after all.

It is an overgeneralization but the numbers don't help.

Racists and xenophobes are really vocal in France. More than the people who are actually being discriminated against.

Thanks, now I'm not hungry anymore...
Well, the assholes act and the sane people don't, so it's really a vocal minority thing.
You might have ten thousand tolerant people and ten angry bigots, but people are only going to listen to the angry bigots yelling while everyone else is quiet.

De Gaulle was a straight cunt
The US trusted the Vichy more than him and Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin, and Truman disliked/hated him

Wasn't this study proved to be unscientific ?
French people hating foreigners and different cultural groups? Who would have expected that?
France already has a terrible reputation as a nation so I doubt this has any real affect.

Lets do some communist social networking.
There is also such a thing as Paris Syndrome for Japanese francophiles.
Basically the French are very rude.

I'm just explaining that things like this are where the stereotypes come from.
My Spanish teacher last semester used to live in France (born in Côte d 'Ivoire) but moved to the US because of issues with discrimination in France (he's black). He told us that on his first day of teaching, most of the class walked out immediately after he came in. I can't speak for the rest of France, but I doubt all of the bigotry was restricted to where he lived.
Japanese francophiles.
I thought they were Germanophiles, maybe they're actually Europhiles. Anyways I thought France being xenophobic was just a stereotype.
