Plans have been lodged to raise the height of the iconic Duke of Wellington statue in Glasgow, in a bid to stop revellers placing traffic cones on it.
The city council wants to raise the plinth as part of a £65,000 project to refurbish the bronze monument.
It said this would end a practice which projected a "depressing image" of Glasgow and would save the £10,000 cost of removing the cone 100 times a year.
Previous attempts to prevent the cone have met widespread local opposition.
The council has already lodged planning permission to carry out the work.
The scheme, which is being supported with £10,000 from Historic Scotland, would see a new granite-clad concrete base of 86cm (34in) added to the memorial to raise its overall height.
£10,000 to remove traffic cones from a statues head?
Shit id do it for half that.
And then someone will just bring a ladder.
And then someone will just bring a ladder.
I sure would, right after they spend all this money to try to prevent it. They'd be pissed.
Why not leave the cone on, adds a bit of colour to an otherwise boring statue, plus, if a cones already on there, nobody will bother putting another one on and if it falls off, someone will put it back on for free.
It's a pity the Duke of Wellingtons skin wasn't made out of barbed wire. He could have terrified the French even more with his presence.
But, that is how human bodies are built I suppose.
And then someone will just bring a ladder.
And it will be even more expensive to remove the cone because the person doing that will need a ladder as well.
RIP

It's not a particularly small statue to begin with.
They should swap the horse for a giraffe, that'd work
Oh the wonderful UK
my local-ish statue, council fought a long war against the chav's but they ultimately lost.

That finger has had all manner of things on it, from a sock, thong, pants and even a used condom, the best combo was undoubtedly the double cone.
Edit: 34 inches is no where near enough anyway, the possiblity of death won't stop somone.
this is stupid and a waste of money. i go to glasgow city centre regularly and have never met anyone who finds the cone "offensive" as the article says. most people like it as they find it funny. people have been doing it for over 30 years. leave it up
otherwise someone might have to use a small ladder to get past those extra 32"...
So their plan to convince all the drunks in town to stop climbing the statue is to raise it's base three feet.. Requiring just as little effort as previously to get up it. This town must not know what to do with it's tax income.
I went for a interview at the Glasgow school of Art earlier this year, I wondered the city for abit after it and snapped this haha!

Ku-Cone Clan
Cony 2012
Probably one of the most iconic sights in Glasgow tbh.
This'll just end with someone bringing both a ladder, a cone AND industrial strength glue.
How the fuck do you spend that much money taking off a traffic cone?
This reminds me of GMod so much
How the fuck does it cost £100 to remove a cone? Just get a stick for christ's sake.

The 10,000 comes from making a new statue every time the old one is coned

I'd do it for a fifth Just live in an apartment nearby, mind my regular business, except a rough every third day I'd have to get my broom down to the street to knock the cone off. Easy dosh.

Yay!
Just saw a petition online which had gathered 10k signatures over night. People really do love the cone.
"Raising the statue will, in any case, only result in people injuring themselves attempting to put the cone on anyway: does anyone really think that a raised plinth will deter drunk Glaswegians?"
That sums it up nicely
That sums it up nicely
Try to deter Glaswegians from ANYTHING drunk or otherwise (high on heroin... sober(?)) - they're a stubborn bunch of people.
100 quid for cone removal. Good to know the local politicians of Glasgow know how to spend tax moneys well!!
