Cells called mesenchymal stem cells — which are capable of developing into bone, cartilage, muscle and other tissues — are abundant in fat tissue and easy to obtain through procedures such as liposuction. Traditionally, cells taken from fat had to be cultured for weeks to isolate stem cells that could become bone. But this process involved risks of infection and genetic instability. Another method to grow bone is by using fresh, noncultured cell composition called stromal vascular fraction. The problem, however, is that stromal vascular fraction cells taken from fat tissue are highly varied and include cells that can’t turn into bone. In this study, researchers from the University of California-Los Angeles isolated and purified human perivascular stem cells (hPSCs) taken from fat tissue and found that these cells worked far better than stromal vascular fraction cells in creating bone. The tests, conducted in animals, also showed that a growth factor called NELL-1 enhanced the formation of bone created by hPSCs. The study was published online June 11 in the journal Stem Cells Translational Medicine. Although the study showed promising results in animals, results in humans are often different. “People have shown that culture-derived cells could grow bone, but these are a fresh cell population and we didn’t have to go through the culture process, which can take weeks,” Dr. Chia Soo, vice chairman for research at UCLA Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, said in a university news release. “The best bone graft is still your own bone, but that is in limited supply and sometimes not of good quality,” Soo said. “What we show here is a faster and better way to create bone that could have clinical applications.” If further research confirms the effectiveness and safety of this method, it may be possible to use a patient’s own hPSCs to grow bone in the desired location inside the body, according to the news release.
No more bone grafts? Fuck yes.
Man, this century is going to be filled with incredible discoveries, too bad we probably wont be able to see the next century's insane developments.

Fuck yeah, science!
And it's found in fat tissue? That's fucking cool
And it's found in fat tissue? That's fucking cool
It was actually discovered recently that having a bit of a pudgy tummy is actually good for you, the sack that holds the fat cells can play a major role in the control of immune system because it supresses T-cells after fighting off an infection and the like. It also releases those stem cells to help repair muscle. http://www.medicaldaily.com/news/20120608/10220/belly-fat-immune-system.htm MORE SCIENCE! :science:
Wait a minute, pure stem cells can be derived from fat tissue? Next Sensationalist Article OBESE AMERICANS MAKE MILLIONS AS MEDICAL FIRMS CLAMOR FOR FAT
At first I thought this will be some alternative to Viagra.
I still want my growable bone joints, please science.
We finally made skelegrow.
Psh, I'm growing a bone right now.

Having a pudgy belly is entirely unnecessary, this is not a case where more is better. Hth the guy who wrote that article would've read something like "abdominal fat" and assumed this meant having a gut.
I can't wait for the time where you can get replacements for your body that are not mechanical
Frankly this will just cause massive overpopulation and earth will be destroyed even faster. Birth control is not an option with current values and the massive increase in humans using up resources will undo all prior attempts to conserve them. Edit: That's the pretty big downside in the massive advances of medical science.
Will the scientists who help with this be called boners?
Frankly this will just cause massive overpopulation and earth will be destroyed even faster. Our current carrying capacity for the Earth is 10 billion, that's another 3 billion, so we're fine for a while. That could be increased with more efficient use of space and actually properly recycling plastics and feedstocks. The Earth will survive and function for a long ass time all we have to do is stop being retarded, and we could just settle a colony on Mars, and we could ship them off to colonise Mars. And you could have used the same argument against vaccinations, and modern medicine since over population has been a concern for some reason for about 20 years.
Would I be the only one who read the title as 'new method for growing boners?'
Man, this century is going to be filled with incredible discoveries, too bad we probably wont be able to see the next century's insane developments.
Depending on how great this century's yield is, we may yet live to see the next.
How tall are you, because I am fit, but 6' 3" and I weigh 77 kilos.
Last time I checked, it was around 180 to 190 Centimeters. So I'd say around 5'9''.
We finally made skelegrow.
Oh man, if we can put this treatment into a drinkable liquid, the name should definitely be Skelegrow.
How tall are you, because I am fit, but 6' 3" and I weigh 77 kilos.
Im 6'3" and around 98 kilos.

Edit: That's the pretty big downside in the massive advances of medical science.
Consider the fact that if nothing is done about it, the population will plateau. It can't grow if there's nothing at all to sustain growth. And then taking into account the ever-declining resources, that plateau is always getting lower and lower. If worst comes to worst and the world falls into chaos, only more and more people die. It's like a fail-safe of sorts to always limit our population to more-or-less sustainable levels, but since Humanity is determined to ignore nature, they'll keep on trying.
Would be a wonderful thing to have happen. Would be even better if they gave military amputees this for free.

America will be the HEALTHIEST nation now!!! Also, this is pretty neat. Also, bone is actually a storage of fat cells so it isn't completely insane that they found stem cells that could differentiate into new bone.
I wish they could start getting this for teeth, that in itself would be an absolute miracle and show the true strength of us as humans. Not born with teeth that can handle our food anymore? I'll just repair my teeth chemically!
