Our smartphones don't do very much when they're sitting unused, typically plugged in overnight, something Samsung and the University of Vienna want to take advantage of to cure diseases. A new app called Power Sleep that's being released this weekend (and backed by Samsung), uses your phone's downtime to crunch protein calculations. That data's used to research cures for diseases, similar to Folding@Home, which was popularized by the PlayStation 3. In this case, Power Sleep — which was made by Samsung's former in-house marketing agency Chiel — doubles as an alarm clock designed to replace whatever alarm people were using before. Once set, the app begins grabbing packets of data to crunch, which are about 1MB in size, then sending them back when the process is complete.
"Is it true you came up with the cure for cancer?"
"Yeah, I did that in my sleep."
Nice, I'd be up for that. I hope it ships by default with Samsung phones.
So, what? Crowdsourced data-crunching?
Question is, is this using up data (which is limited and overcharges for almost every provider)?
I already sometimes end up racking up my entire 3gbs in the first few days of the bill, so I wouldn't be surprised if this thing took a chunk out of the data people will be able to use (and therefore be poo in practice)
Although I know nothing about data crunching and how fast/slow it is.
I wonder how much data this could actually crunch if you consider average time it takes to crunch 1mb of data with the number of phones that would have this enabled.
Considering the CPU power in our handhelds I'm surprised this hasn't been done before.

i would assume that if you're cool enough to do this
you have wifi
Good point
I'm too much of a pleb to get a new router for that.

I find it kind of strange that you have a smartphone but not a wireless router
How is your 3GB data plan enough if you're never on wifi
I get overcharges often

It requires wifi to work.

Get a router, it will practically pay for itself.
I hope there is a way to use it over 4g. I want to break my record of 40gb in 1 billing period.

Only have it on when you're connected to wi-fi, considering that it works as an alarm clock...that might just be their intention.
i immediately thought it would make my phone detect cancer in MY body
and that thought was followed by "fuck thatd need some powerful radiation to do that, bet itd give me cancer"
