• Power Supply comparison question, need input on two units with varying wattage.

The current power supply in my computer is "Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W Continuous Power Supply" and my brother just gave me his (barely used) "XFX Core Edition PRO550W (P1-550S-XXB9) 550W Power Supply" The 650W Antec power supply has done me good so far, but I am considering switching to the lower wattage XFX power supply because it seems to be of higher quality. Losing 100W won't be an issue because the power requirements of my PC don't require it, so I'm wondering if the XFX unit is better in general. It seems to be of higher quality, and also the cabling is much more organized and would take up less space. On top of that it's a quieter unit when running, as the Antec has been quite loud and I remember my brother using the XFX and it was damn quiet. Here is the info page for the XFX 550W power supply:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207013
Here is the info page for the Antec 650W power supply:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371015
I'm familiar with most computer parts and their specs, however with power supply units I don't really know what means what, because in the past I figured all that really matters is the wattage. I don't want to be swayed by the XFX marketing and sleek design, the aesthetics of the unit means nothing to me so I'm curious as to what you guys think about these two units. Cheers
They both put out roughly the same wattage on the 12v rails and the XFX has a single rail rather than splitting it to 3 rails. XFX is better.

Anyway, the XFX is most probably better - the Antec is an older model, and while you shouldn't take 80 PLUS certification as gospel, a bronze model is usually of better quality than one with only "80 PLUS".
I'm moving the guts of my desktop into his old case (it's bigger, better ventilation also with a built in fan) and I'll try the XFX as opposed to the Antec. I'll double-check my math with the wattage but I'm going to give the XFX a shot! Thanks guys.

Multiple rails on a PSU can be such a bitch to work with, Mine has 3 at 22, 22 and 25A
