Ads on my phone OS? Yeah, no thanks asshole's.
Ads on my phone OS? Cut your old service, buy this, and have something to hold you over for a while. I can deal with ads in desperate times vs having to pay Verizon over $500 for a pre-owned-probably-busted-up iPhone 5 or even $200 for a flip phone in the case of my LG G6 getting stolen.

What's to stop you from rooting it and flashing a custom ROM?
What's to stop you from rooting it and flashing a custom ROM?
other readily available sub $100 smart phones that dont have ads

There's a very real chance that if you buy one of these phones at that price point and then flash custom firmware, you're getting much more bang for your buck than competing phones. I've not researched it though, this is just speculation.

Ads more like AIDS am I right
Ads more like AIDS am I right
Just what I always wanted, Amazon Fire Aids
did a quick look up and it's happened before http://www.rootjunky.com/amazon-ads-bloat-removed-from-the-motorola-moto-g-4th-gen/ tho this is a phone from the same promotion but from a year ago. dunno if amazon made it harder since then
I had an option of getting an amazon prime moto G4 but, iirc, I needed an prime sub at $50 and there is like a $50 savings after that. tbh, $50 savings isn't worth it. The chance of bricking it if you do something dumb, a certain WiFi bug, and apps with play store DRM makes rooting not really feasible to me. I bought the moto G4 because I wanted a phone close to stock Android as possible within a budget. Buying a bloatware filled G4 is putting the cart before the horse. The BIGGEST point you need to look for is an unlocked bootloader, which is the specific case with the amazon moto g4.
