I find it annoying when anti-abortionists call themselves "pro-life" – which carries the implication that those who don't fully agree with them are "pro-death". I don't like abortion, but I've never heard of anyone who does, not even those who get paid to do it. It happens naturally, in the form of miscarriages: Nature does not expect every embryo to become a baby.
I live in Ireland, where abortion is still illegal, but there are many "counseling services", and family planning clinics are a mere day trip away from Dublin, by ferry to Holyhead in Wales. The key objection to it here is religious vital-ism, the idea that a fertilized egg immediately gains an ineffable “spark of life”. If you don’t believe that, you are left with the idea that the development of a life is a continuum, something that happens gradually over time, and not a yes/no proposition. This leaves a grey area that the law of the land tries to fill, with varying degrees of success in different countries. When you have to draw a line through a grey area, you can't expect to please everyone.
Personally, I take a long term view: prevention is better than cure, so contraception is preferable to abortion. If contraception fails, however, and abortion is considered, the long-term problem becomes one of bringing a child in to the world who is unwanted, and who may only suffer a life of hardship.
This may sound harsh, but this world does not need more people: it needs fewer and better people, people who have been loved, cared for, supported, and allowed to develop to their full potential. That has to start with being healthy and wanted, being a boon to their parents, and not a burden from before birth. As a civilization, we are past the stage where breeding is an imperative, a duty to perform; now, since we don't have to do it, we may as well try to do it as well as we can, with an eye on the whole process, from conception to adulthood. We don’t have to emulate Nature in all respects, if we can avoid the consequences of overbreeding.

Incoming flame war.
For every baby we cannot abort, I will dropkick 3 pregnant women in the stomach.
Dont want a baby, dont have a baby
What if Virgin Mary had an abortion!? No jesus christ! Abortion is evil (let the flaming commence)!
But seriously. I am pro abortion.

You realize this is "General Discussion" right? Why bother replying if you have noting useful to add to this thread. I am simply wanting to hear what people think about Abortion, no flame war is needed. For once, let us talk about this majorly controversial problem in a serious manner.
Anti-abortionists should all get shot. It's your own body, why are they going to put rules on it?
What do they think they achieve? Eternal life in heaven?
The rivers should run red with the blood of unborn children!
Only then will the gods show mercy to mankind

Your own body? it's a person inside you, genius.

Barack Obama's father wanted his wife to get an abortion, so in other words Obama is basically a project of abortion.
Now look what he grew up to be? The president of the United States. I'm sure his father would be eating them words up.
Personally I feel if you have good reason (such as the pregnancy was a result of rape, or the child will be born severely disabled) then abortion is acceptable. But if it's just some stupid bitch who didn't use protection, she should have to deal with the consequences. Abortion should not be looked at as just an easy way out of a pregnancy.
That's just my opinion, anyways.
Its choice, just use a rusty coat hanger if you're afraid of others opinions...
Your own body? it's a person inside you, genius.
It can't feel anything and it can't think. Should we not judge by who suffers the most, and not by some religious people's idea of when human life starts?
Your own body? it's a person inside you, genius.
You don't get an abortion the day before the child is getting born...

It's not right to deprive someone of life without their consent. If they can't think they can't agree.

There's a bunch of choices,
that doesn't make them right

Why not? You're not "loosing" any more life than if you had used a condom.
Are you also against "the morning after" pill?

So they become a person the day before they're born? :downs:

I agree with you. Incest is another reason too.
I hate it whenever I hear mothers aborting their children because they "we are not ready" - and yes I hear that alot.
I think its great.
We're getting over populated on this earth and people are doing their part to cut down.
It's not right to deprive someone of life without their consent. If they can't think they can't agree.
Hey, do you think it's wrong to masturbate because your sperms will die?

People in vegetative states are also taken off life support without agreeing to do so.
Imagine having something growing inside you, that you really hate and will never love. How is having a baby like that a good idea?

I don't really know how to respond to this.

Ever hear of adoption?
I don't really like the whole concept of abortions, honestly, but i think everyone deserves a choice and i definitely understand why it can be necessary.

I'm simply pointing out, this topic is no fun to debate about, because it will lead nowhere. Internet arguments in the vein of religion and abortion ALWAYS end badly, no exceptions. I had something very useful to add, in the fact that anyone who participates in this thread will hereby be fueling an incredibly boring yet heated farce of a debate.
So they become a person the day before they're born? :downs:
They become a person when they're a bunch of stem cells?
Again, there is no point in arguing when they become a person, you should argue about when they can feel pain. If the kid could survive being born, it's too late to have an abortion.
I think abortion should always be legal, whatever the case. However, as soon as the baby resembles a baby and is bigger than a lightbulb it should not happen. I think that's basically the law here in the UK anyway, so I'm happy.
Hey, do you think it's wrong to masturbate because your sperms will die?
Does that make it okay to kill a baby?
Just because things die doesn't mean everything should.
So they become a person the day before they're born? :downs:
No not really, but I wouldn't call an embryo a person.
I don't think being pregnant for 9 months is very pleasant.
Again, there would be no less life if the dad had used a condom.

Around 50% of pregnancies end in miscarriage anyways (most of them before 2 weeks of pregnancy has passed).
