When I startup my the laptop vista just goes to an all white screen, I can see and move the mouse, but thats it.
Is there anything I can do to pull the data off and reformat, or am I fucked.
Does the vista orb animation play?
Yes, it does.
Then white shows up? Or is it after logon?
right after login

Ctrl+Shift+Esc doesn't work I suppose?
Does the same happen in safe mode?
that combo doesnt work, but I can start up into safemode

Try virus scans / sys restore if all else fails you could create a partition (if you don't have another storage medium) and back up things you need.
It sounds like winlogon.exe is erroring right after the Vista logo animation plays (hence why the screen turns white, which signifies something not responding). On a wild hunch try disabling DEP in safe mode:

When winlogon.exe fails it goes black. Trust me I've been working with Rafael and Ave and a lot of themers all day to day regarding winlogon.exe crashing.
Well... This sounds a bit unlikely, but it is good to throw options in. Years ago when I installed some game onto a PC, the graphics card burned out or something, and whenever you turned on the PC after the logon started the screen would slowly go white. You sure its not hardware related?

Actually I once had it go white on my PC, was very worrying, in the end it just magically started working again, was a worrying 2 days though.
