• Internet goes out at random times, timing out during online games

Okay, so I've been having a shitload of troubles with my ISP over the past year or so, and they've been gradually getting worse. At first I would have short downtimes a few times a week, then they would happen more frequently, and now worst of all it seems to time out when I'm playing a game. It won't disconnect, but it will time out. (I'm still having the downtimes as well though). I think this is because my ISP just sucks, but is there anything I can at least try to do to fix this? I would switch my ISP in a heartbeat but there's only one other around here which requires a phone jack near your PC which is pretty much out of the question, and I hear many negative things about them as well. My ISP is Comcast, by the way.
Don't think you can do anything really no. But I dunno.
This is a common problem with Comcast. I had this problem for years, and yes, it is completely their fault (my SNR ratio was complete shit and connections would just drop out. I even confirmed this with expensive diagnostic hardware). No, they don't give a shit, nor will they do anything about it. Consider yourself lucky you have any choice at all in broadband providers. Many of us are stuck with Comcast and their shitty service.
Call them. Annoy them. They will fix it, but it is going to take half a dozen home visits. I called them every fucking day and annoyed the piss out of Comcast and they eventually did....something to fix it, but the problem is gone now.

What you can try doing is try looking through the logs your router takes. It should report dropped packets on the WAN. You know how to bring up the router logs on your computer, right?
Are you talking to the OP or me?

When I used to play WoW, it was funny how many people in a raid got a disconnect mid-boss fight and would come back in vent flaring about how much they hate Comast.
Sorry if I misunderstood, but are you referring to the security logs that a router takes?
Most routers will log all the connections and disconnections and DHCP requests and stuff on its internal logs.
Most routers will log all the connections and disconnections and DHCP requests and stuff on its internal logs.
Well the only log I see in the router management interface is the security log.
Bit of an update here, I plugged my modem directly to my PC and bypassed my router just for the sake of trying it again, played some BF2 for a few hours and had absolutely no disconnects or timing out at all so far. Will keep this updated as things go along.
Well a Comcast technician came down to check the outside to see if everything was okay and he asked me if I had a router (which I do). He told me that for some stupid reason routers have issues with their service and cause time outs and whatnot. This is why everything was OK when I connected my modem directly. I asked him if there's anything I can do and he said that the only routers they found that *seem* to be compatible are neatgear. So looks like I'm going to have to try one of those.
So can anyone share any more similar experiences or tell me if there's a way to get a Belkin N1 router to work with this ISP? I still haven't bought the new router because I'm short on cash and skeptical if it will work or not.
