News is bad for your health. It leads to fear and aggression, and hinders your creativity and ability to think deeply. The solution? Stop consuming it altogether.
http://www.theguardian.com/media/2013/apr/12/news-is-bad-rolf-dobelli
Everyone on Facepunch figured this out forever ago.
Well I guess I'll just stop reading the new--WAIT A MINUUUUTE
what do you mean article reading about people shooting and raping each other every day has boundlessly increased my happiness by many percentages
So ignorance really is bliss?
bye bye sensationalist headlines
well, I'm screwed.
Would removing Sensational Headlines up the overall posting quality on Facepunch then?
why would a news orginization publish this
This is an edited extract from an essay first published at dobelli.com. The Art of Thinking Clearly: Better Thinking, Better Decisions by Rolf Dobelli is published by Sceptre, £9.99. Buy it for £7.99 at guardianbookshop.co.uk
gee i wonder
but the thread discussions always bring hilarious statements that make me laugh which nullifies that sadness screw you theguardian
why would a news orginization publish this
It doesn't matter who posts it.. it would still be news.

I think it's more important to not blindly believe what you're spoonfed by the mainstream media and do your own research on subjects that are important to you
Its like its trying to tell me something about me posting here in the first place. Deep.
Okay, why?
News misleads.
Then you should think about it, rather than accepting it on face value. I thought this was known already?
News is irrelevant.
A lot of it is, but much of it gives context to the events happening in one's life. Irrelevant news is what's irrelevant, not all of it.
News has no explanatory power.
Either that should read headlines, or you're getting your news from a shit source. If nothing else, this links up with thinking about what you're reading.
News is toxic to your body.
Again, you should think about shit and avoid going full emotional about stuff you hear about on the news. Stress is bad, this isn't new(s).
News increases cognitive errors.
Again, think about the news and be prepared to get rid of preconceptions.
News inhibits thinking.
Not if you think about it.
News works like a drug.
This I cannot dispute, but so does TV and basically every form of media.
News wastes time.
Only if you're reading shit as an excuse to waste time. Did finding out that Mandela died constitute a waste of time?
News makes us passive.
Ignoring the news stories which incite people to act. Trayvon Martin springs to mind, as do the Student Riots in London last(?) year and the current shit going down in Ukraine.
News kills creativity.
I don't even know how to attack this. However, given that this point is backed up by the author not knowing of "a single truly creative mind who is a news junkie "; I'll say that I am a news junkie and I spend a decent amount of my time writing (being creative). This article is a bullshit opinion piece.
This just in, thinking is bad for you, have a frontal lobotomy and experience life to the fullest. Also, a lot of the points in this "article" are terrible.
I noticed this last night actually, whenever I go into SH or on any news site it just makes me sad, it's like "oh great we're still fucking over the earth", "why would somebody do that what the fuck", "how are these people in charge of a country", was thinking I should just stop reading the news entirely and I think I'm going to
Would removing Sensational Headlines up the overall posting quality on Facepunch then?
No, it'd just spill out in to other forums.
Guys in case you missed my post, this is just bullshit to get you to buy his book. Yeah news can make you feel bad but better that than be completely oblivious to problems going on in your country and the world that can affect you and be unprepared for when they hit you.
I think it's more important to not blindly believe what you're spoonfed by the mainstream media and do your own research on subjects that are important to you
This. Too many people are too lazy to research and debunk yellow journalism.
Instead of reading news I am also going to watch porn! This will give me double plus on the happy scale
This. Too many people are too lazy to research and debunk yellow journalism.
But yellow journalism has sparked some of our greatest military initiatives!
Here's the original essay. There are big claims in there that aren't cited or backed up with anything.
Would removing Sensational Headlines up the overall posting quality on Facepunch then?
yes all news comments on any sites are shit, it's a law of nature. No really there is no comment section of anything news related on any site that isn't garbage
Would removing Sensational Headlines up the overall posting quality on Facepunch then?
The influx to Rust would make negate it
I was expecting an Onion article from the thread title and highlighted sentence.
This is news to me. [editline]12th December 2013[/editline] I'm not even sorry.
News is stressful to read because the world is generally full of stress-inducing shitty decisions.
Would removing Sensational Headlines up the overall posting quality on Facepunch then?
While the Rust subforum exists the average will remain abysmal. At least there's containment.
