When people are grasping at straws like this, I really think its time for Valve to clear the air regarding half life 3. Seriously....just give us a "yes its in development" or "no, its been canned, shut the fuck up about it" statement please. I'm not even asking for details, launch dates or anything. I just want confirmation that its in the works or not.
I'm waiting for someone to do this hoax a third time in a few months and have everyone fall for it again
99% sure that it's "in the works", just probably not their main focus right now. I'm also pretty sure that they're trying to wait for an opportunity or technology that will make it as ground-breaking as the release of half-life 2 and half-life 1 were in their respective times, to try and keep up the half-life legacy. (which they realized they weren't living up too completely with their episodic releases, which is part of why they stopped doing them.) Why do you think they're so interested in advancing gaming tech right now?
Woah it's not like 1. It was obvious 2. We've known this for a few days
Well why would they trademark Half Life 3 if they already have Half Life trademarked?
Well why would they trademark Half Life 3 if they already have Half Life trademarked?
Royalty troll?

Valve, it's cool that you're working on constantly updating steam, TF2, CS:GO, etc and all, but just make another fucking game. Seriously. You won't keep your loyal audience forever, no matter how much we love you, silence does not keep that love.
Half-Life 3 is possibly "the thing you don't talk about" on VALVe by now, since the expectations are so fucking high that even a great game might fail to honour the endless hype surrounding it, possibly causing people to be somewhat scared about even touching it.

But in regards to HL3, I have no idea how they're gonna pull that off. So much for them to live up to.

So much for them to live up to.
To be honest I don't think they have that much to live up to - they're gonna have to make the story work well, they are going to have to make a new engine similar but much better than source. Those are the two main things they're gonna have to do, the rest (gameplay, etc) just has to be up to todays standard. Neither HL1 or HL2 revolutionized games as much as people claim, the first game began with scripted events and the second game had a great engine, other than that they were not the best games ever made for their times, just good.
I don't care a bit about Half Life 3, shouldn't EP3 come out before that??
I'm hoping this will come soon, Gabe has to see that this is annoying people.
He does, he's even said so at this point. I recall seeing an article at some point about him saying that really, they're afraid to announce it. They know at this point that it will never live up to what we want it to be and they are afraid of our reaction when we see their product. Also offtopic, someone on here has your avatar as their 404 screen on their website and i can't remember who it was.
I don't care a bit about Half Life 3, shouldn't EP3 come out before that??
It's a little too late for Episode 3, HL-3 will mostly be Episode 3.
It's a little too late for Episode 3, HL-3 will mostly be Episode 3.
Duke Nukem Forever was still called Duke Nukem Forever after all that time. The name of a game doesn't arbitrarily change just because a lot of time has passed.
Duke Nukem Forever was still called Duke Nukem Forever after all that time. The name of a game doesn't arbitrarily change just because a lot of time has passed.
Ofcourse not, but Episode 3 to me implies the same game as the previous episodes except new story. HL1 and all it's expansions ran on an engine and played out pretty much the same, HL2, EP1 and EP2 all ran on the same engine and played out pretty much exactly the same, so I assume when there is a new engine it will be called HL3.
Why would the name change because of the engine changing?
Why would the name change because of the engine changing?
A new engine usually means the game will play out differently. [editline]7th October 2013[/editline] If they're doing the next Half-Life game on source I expect they'll call it Episode 3, if they make it on a new engine I expect they'll call it Half-Life 3.
Care to give some examples of when a new engine has meant that the game has played out significantly differently? (Oh and it doesn't count if there's a different developer making the sequel) [editline]7th October 2013[/editline] Cause Half-Life 2 didn't really change any of the core Half-Life 1 mechanics, despite being on a new engine. The only changes were in addition to the already existing gameplay and storytelling style (and physics based puzzles)
Duke Nukem Forever was still called Duke Nukem Forever after all that time. The name of a game doesn't arbitrarily change just because a lot of time has passed.
Valve said there won't be an episode 3. Like, 4 years ago.
Why would the name change because of the engine changing?
Because calling it "Episode" will make people believe that it's just a short game.
Cause Half-Life 2 didn't really change any of the core Half-Life 1 mechanics, despite being on a new engine. The only changes were in addition to the already existing gameplay and storytelling style (and physics based puzzles)
I don't think core mechanics will change for HL-3 either, that'd be weird - but there were a lot of differences between the first Half-Life and the Sequal, while there were nearly no difference between the main game and the expansions. Episode 3 is the name of an expansion in my opinion. [editline]7th October 2013[/editline] I don't know about many games that switched engines completely, but games like Fable 1 and then Fable 2 made some major updates to the engine and how they played out. Another example is Starcraft I & II, the Warcraft series. I don't know any series that made an expansion on a new engine :v:
Valve said there won't be an episode 3. Like, 4 years ago.
Do you have a source on that?
Because calling it "Episode" will make people believe that it's just a short game.
Possibly, but the game will be as long as Valve sees fit. Also you have to consider that the length of a game isn't what counts, it's how enjoyable the game is for the end users.
Half-Life 2: Episode 3 on a new engine would be like calling calling ArmA 3 for ArmA 2: *SUBTITLE* or calling The Sims 3, The Sims 2: Subtitle.
Do you have a source on that?
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109857-Valve-Outgrows-Its-Episodes-Phase
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109857-Valve-Outgrows-Its-Episodes-Phase
Ah yes this old argument, note how nothing in this article actually says that there won't be an Episode 3. "We went through the episodes phase, and now we're going towards shorter and even shorter cycles," By this logic (read the rest of the article), Valve would be making patches to Episode 2 to add further content à la TF2 major patches or even L4D2 major patches. But Valve haven't released large patches to Episode 2, nor have they released Episode 3.
Valve has all the rights to call it Episode 3, I won't care, I just think it's really weird. Half-Life 2: Episode 1 & 2 are after all Half-Life 2 games, so Episode 3 would in my opinion have to be a Half-Life 2 game too.
