Cool new liquid armor might just be a life saver for soldier in the future

A British defence company has come up with a liquid armour that is supposedly more efficient than the Kevlar currently used by our troops. Described by it's manufacturers BAE as being "bullet proof custard" it could help save more lives on the front lines sometime in the future.
I think this is pretty cool. We've come up with electromagnetic tank armour akin to a kind of forcefield, and now bullet proof jelly. Lets hope that the Govt or MoD or whoever finances these things will pay attention to these devices that can help save lives, and not spend untold billions on refitting nuclear subs that serve only to provide us with bragging rights.

What do you think of this?
Personally I think it's pretty good news, since I come from a family with a lot of military history, with my father being sent to Lebanon(sp?) and all.

I heard of this a while ago, but it was only a concept and a test, looks like were really stepping up.
I hope it's mass produced ASAP.
as long as it's finished of course.
Wah Liquid Armor. Just the name sounds cool.
Would it look like those Scifi movies?

Not really :/
BAE systems is pretty fucking awesome.
Isn't that liquid the kind that becomes solid when impacted?

I believe so.
Reminds me of that Armour concept that was suppost to be limber and flexible when not under pressure, but when a bullet hit it it was suppost to harden in that one particular spot, stopping the bullet, and then returning to its soft flexible state.
Bullet proof custard, so if soldiers get hungry they can open up the armor and eat it.
Bulletproof Custard... Sounds like some kinda crazy action film with lashings of absurd comedy.
Yay for Non Newtonian fluids :D

That's exactly what it is, essentially.
Wait if its none Newtonian liquid wont it leak once a bullet hits the armor? Or will there be alot of tiny pockets full of the liquid?

As they said, it's like custard. Custard has liquid properties normally but when you apply pressure to it, it becomes a solid. If you fill a bowl full of custard, and slowly dip your finger in, you'll get it in pretty easily, but if you were to punch down on it you'd hardly break the top of it.
This gives me ideas. You could base some interesting game mechanics off this.
-snip- ninjad
Saw this mentioned on BBC news site, seems interesting could be decent in the future with more research.

Yes, Crysis, Maximum Armour.
Wouldn't it be heavy?
Yes, Crysis, Maximum Armour.
No. I was thinking about having move around, under the player's control. Both to repair a severely damaged section but weakening the whole or preparing for a heavy assault. I thinking for a strategy game, actually.
Wouldn't it be heavy?
They're soldiers, I highly doubt it will be heavy for them.

Things can be heavy for soldiers too. You try running around the desert in a full uniform and armor with additional 40+ pounds, It's hellish.

Probably makes your organs bullet proof if you eat enough... and gives you constipation.
