So what was the deal with this game anyway? Was it just another WoW-clone or did it actually introduce something new into the MMO-scene when it came out?
Fun but flawed game. I'd like to see it come back, even if it's development was stalled out to whatever existed before shut down. Some guys tried to get a private server up and got as far as enemy AI on a single map before getting a C&D from NCSoft.

It wasn't very good to be honest. It was extremely flawed and had issues prior to release, they did a large patch that didn't really fix much and still released anyway. Probably had one of the worst releases content wise also, dungeons were half finished when you went in them.
The game just wasn't fit for release at all

It was different and a lot of fun during the beta. A lot of random events. You might just be chilling in some base and then all of a sudden the bad guys storm it and take it over. The class system was awesome as well.
Wish they would make it F2P or ideally do it the way Guild Wars does it. Buy it and then there are small boosts and whatnot, nothing gameplay changing, in the store.

Beta wasn't bad cause I could overlook balance issues and the fact it was unfinished but when they release it in the same state I don't really know what they were expecting.
I actually played a lot of the beta and went the route of the rocket launcher class. It was actually fun then that pre release 'miracle overhaul' patch came and apparently i needed to have 5 different element rocket launchers as everything was immune to something and it just made the gameplay boring. Like sure it made sense to have elements that resist the one you use but they implemented in a way that was terrible

It didn't play much like WoW at all thanks to the semi-third person shooter combat. The quests and progression paths were the same though. It did do some neat things that I haven't seen other games do, like branching classes that were cloned so you could go back and level something else from level 5 or 15 instead of the beginning. Also bases could be attacked and conquered by AI and dynamically pushed out by players. The main problem with the game was absolute lack of endgame content. People got to 50 and just quit. They released several patches but nothing really stuck. Also there was practically no PVP; you had dueling and clan wars. The clan wars was kind of cool because it turned the game into a sort of PVP server just for you and your opponents, but it wasn't very balanced. PVE wise there were dungeons spread out during the leveling track but only a couple of ones available at endgame that didn't really drop better gear. There was just nothing to do.
It's sad, because as the game came to a close it felt like the dev team was finally kicking things into gear. Battleground-esque instanced PVP matches were being publically tested and the first big piece of post-release content was about to give every class an individual exo-suit/mech that would have taken time and skill to get. Unfortunately NCSoft just pulled the plug.

I enjoyed what I played of it. It was really fun having a bunch of people defend outposts against an onslaught of enemies in a sort of Defiance type combat
I had fun while it was alive, can't really say I was sad it died though.
[editline]8th June 2013[/editline]
Considering I got perks for Aion etc.
I spent quite a few hours on this game during the beta, it was entertaining but it was not the most well pathed out game as I spent a lot of time wandering around doing fuck all
still defending outposts was fun and so was the combat.
Also the way the classes worked was pretty neat. There were very loose tank/DPS/healing roles but it was a far cry from what WoW or Rift uses with its solid lines between them. The way weapons and armor worked was that nothing was simply better than anything else. Netguns did poor damage, but locked a target to the ground for a few seconds. Grenade launchers did less damage than rocket launchers, but had larger AOE's and fired faster. Different armor sets had different attributes as well; reflective armor had average stats all around but reflected damage back at the attacker. Bio armor had lower protection and regeneration but healed the health of yourself and everyone around you. Stealth armor reduced the aggro range you produced.
All of this combined let you spec out into interesting builds. One I remember someone talking about was a controller build; a heavy class using a sonic grenade launcher. The massive AOE properties of the launcher combined with the sonic elemental type meant that you could stun huge groups of enemies for your buddies to wipe out. Healing abilities were also available to half of the classes because they were based on weapons, and not abilities. Some classes, namely Biotechnician, got a direct heal ability but overall logistics were handled with a tool. This allowed a group of 5 (4? I can't remember) run around shooting people and at any time any of the Support classes could simply pull out a repair tool or healing tool and patch everyone up.

it felt kinda Battlefieldy like that, completely different from normal MMO concepts today.
which is what made defending outpost so fun because it was so loose like that.
Why the fuck would they listen to 10,000 fans when they told the City of Heroes community to fuck off?
I really enjoyed this game when it was still out, outpost defence was great. Was a great change from every other MMO.
HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLSY SHIT! YES!
People often copmare Firefall to this game, when trying to describe itm personally never played this, but if I could I would, seems like the games are quite close in mechanics, besides shooting in Firefall being more precise and without random numbers. People often say that TR was ahead of it's time and lacked publicity, if it were to be revived now, it could become very successfull. People who speak of playing this game sound like they loved it very much, and that the community was great, we need more of those. If this game was to be revived, their mechanics would need to be solid and the systems deep to compete with many current MMOs.

You can usually say the same for MMO before closing as the only people that still play it liked and and because there was hardly any people there was a closer community.
To be entirely honest Firefall does very similar PvE mechanics with the dynamic world and missions. And personally I like it better. Leveling is unique and not a number that means you have better stats, your not locked into a class, and you can change most aspects of your character for free. I'd much rather to see where they take Firefall on launch rather than bringing back Tabula Rasa through nostalgia goggles.
As far as I know, tabula rasa was the first real MMO to have proper shooter mechanics
Unfortunately it came to release as unfinished and lacking content.
The biggest mistake was releasing it on a monthly subscription (this was the period when free to play games were just starting to pick up) so a very big chunk of those who tried it in the beta left it as soon as it ended and never looked at it again
TR was indeed ahead of it's time but right now games like firefall or defiance surpass it in pretty much every way
Game sucked, leave it dead.
I think problem of this game was that is was published by NCSoft. NCSoft is notorious for shutting down their games. They already shut down Exteel and Dungeon Runners, both which lasted less than two years.
The problem with this game was that aside from a horribly implemented shooting mechanic, it didn't bring much new to the table and had no lasting appeal.
I tried playing it when it went free for the last 6 months or so, but my computer at the time just couldn't handle it.
20fps while staring at the ground in a cave. :(
I loved it and i totally miss it :(
Someone told me it was one of the worst MMOs ever released and sucked from day one. Never had a chance to take a look though, so could be wrong.

Auto Assault too, again another NCSoft published MMO, didn't last 2 years.

Auto Assault always interested me when I was younger, was it any good? I never got to play it.

It wasn't terrible but nothing great. An interesting concept that didn't really get far.
All the shutting down talk reminded me of Earth&Beyond. RIP. Fun game.
Oh yeah, I remember Auto Assault. I think I had a beta invite, but again, my computer was terrible.
