In light of two soldiers being killed on home soil in recent weeks, there are renewed calls by federal politicians to make Remembrance Day a day all Canadians get off to observe and remember. In the House of Commons Tuesday evening, MPs will debate Bill C-597, a private member's bill seeking to make Remembrance Day a nationwide statutory holiday. It is currently a holiday and paid day off in all provinces and territories except Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. The bill -- officially titled “An Act to Amend the Holidays Act” -- was introduced by Ontario NDP MP Dan Harris. Stupid American here. What is Remembrance Day in honor of? Veterans? Victims of violence? A specific date in history? Explanations would improve this post for those of us outside of Canada.
Stupid American here. What is Remembrance Day in honor of? Veterans? Victims of violence? A specific date in history? Explanations would improve this post for those of us outside of Canada.
It's basically the exact same as Veteran's Day in the US.

Huh, I didnt realize that parts of the country didnt get it as a holiday. Ive respected the war dead a whole damn lot since reading All Quiet on the Western Front. But damn was I happy when Skyrim was released on a day off

In all regards, it's about remembering the Men/Women that have passed/died in the service. We usually hold for silence. It's also a day where the scummiest people come out. There was news of an old lady who has serviced this country, accepting donations toward the Army, where $300 or so was stolen from in front of her. Disgraceful. I'd hope that whomever did that, truly gets ran over by a truck.
Just an update, the bill just passed the second reading and is now to go to the Heritage Committee for study.
OK. so it's in honor of the people who died in the armed services. I can't help but think "Why hasn't this been done already?" Just don't go eagleland on it and call it something like "Patriot Day".
Odd, here in NS everything is closed that day anyway. I thought it was a Holiday
