Ubuntu creator British company Canonical wants to bring the dual-booting Edge to fruition by raising a whopping 21.5 million pounds ($32 million) in a month on Indiegogo. It claims this is the biggest target ever for a crowdfunded campaign. The campaign intends to produce 40,000 units; if you want to own an Edge of your very own, you'll get a handset if you pledge 394 pounds ($600) today, or 532 pounds ($830) thereafter.
Talk about setting your goals too high.
Yeah.... no.
Not gonna happen.

lol
Nope.

I mean jesus, Star Citizen, the largest croud funding project to date, has only collected 14 million over the course of like 3/4 of a year.

Also, personally, I believe the phone is too damn expensive.
Hey mister mister, you wouldn't happen to have 32 FUCKING MILLION DOLLARS spare in your pocket would ya?
I haven't ate caviar in 2 days man!!! And my platinum coated dumpster is getting out of style fast!
Looks like an awesome phone. I like that they're looking at things like the screen, battery, internals, wasn't even expecting the ability to dual boot Android. 600$ is about what you'd pay for a high end, unlocked smart phone. I just think they've set their goal a bit too high, this is something only enthusiasts will buy.

32 mill in 30 days?
you couldn't see cars in crowdfunding in that time
and the 'affordable price' only have 5000 units for 600 meaning they will only get 3 million chunk.

To be fair, it looks like a beautifully designed phone with tasteful design decisions and good hardware (and 128GB of storage) for less than many phones you buy off-contract.
I would maybe consider getting one if it were better performing than a Nexus 4, but full specs aren't out yet so it's hard to tell.
I can't ever see this phone really taking off at the current moment even if it got the funding it needed, the cost is killer and I bet the battery life is too
That said the fact that the phone is basically a computer that you can hook up to anywhere is pretty neat, I just question how useful that'll be to anyone but the most android-yest phone hacker crowd.
Especially since.. you still kind of need a kb/m with you to use the "PC" mode, which defeats the portability and purpose of using a phone for such a task anyways
Good idea, but IMO the tech isn't simply here yet to carry this through for it to have wide appeal and make it properly effective. Call me when we got the same thing going on but with some kind of expandable screen or with leap motion tech integrated and it displays a hologram or something versus needing to use a KB/m on a screen.

I'm way more interested in ubuntu andriod, it's what windows is moving to which is why you have the train wreck that window 8 was and still is.

okay that would make me back it if I had butt loads of money.
though if I had such money I would be making my own phone with mram and a phone that's both a wallet and a phone in one.
It has almost reached 3 million, hasn't been 24 hours yet either.
tbh i want one
they've raised over 3 million in less than 24 hours
they may reach their goal
for the hardware they're claiming it will be, it is worth the price
Budget is as follows:
$2 million - Marketing
$6 million - R&D
$24 million - Payroll
I just got a phone, yet I am still tempted to invest. Maybe May 2014 is a good time for an upgrade...
who would want an ubuntu phone anyway

I would consider it if it was a similar price/spec as the nexus 4.
Considered investing, saw that with Indiegogo they debit the money immediately.
Not really happy with that.

Oh my..
If I wasn't stuck on a plan for almost another whole year I would sell my iPhone 5 for this, $830 isn't all that much.
Convergence is a nice idea, but with how easy smartphones are stolen/break...

I just don't get it - people around me break smartphones all the damned time.
I throw mine places, drop it, treat it like a guy treats anything, and out of the 6 smartphones I've owned I've never broken one.
I just do not understand how people manage to break phones.

I see that a lot with people with iPhones, It's either the people who I know are just clumbsy with it. or the iPhone is just genuinely made out of breadsticks.
Gave them my support earlier today:

You will need to tell us all about it. I was about to decide to spend 600 on it when the deal expired and I was not willing to go for the full price.

Hoyl fuck, that sounds a little overkill.

Welp, it's happening, cellphones officially the same amount of ram as my PC :v:
I just made a 600 dollar impulse purchase
Who would have imagined cell phones would become mini computers?
