China says 5,394 arrested in Internet porn crackdown
The Chinese government has run a highly publicized campaign against what officials said were banned smutty and lewd pictures overwhelming the country's Internet and threatening the emotional health of children.
Chinese police said late on Thursday the crackdown on Internet pornography had brought 5,394 arrests and 4,186 criminal case investigations in 2009 -- a fourfold increase in the number of such cases compared with 2008.
The announcement on the Ministry of Public Security's website (www.mps.gov.cn) said the drive would deepen in 2010.
Police would "intensify punishments for Internet operations that violate laws and regulations", said the statement from the ministry's Internet security section.
"Strengthen monitoring of information," it urged, "Press Internet service providers to put in place preventive technology."
With an estimated 360 million Internet users, China has a bigger online population than any other country. But the ruling Communist Party worries the Internet could become a dangerous conduit for threatening images and ideas.
The ministry did not say how many of the 5,394 suspects arrested were later charged, released or prosecuted.
The anti-pornography drive has also netted many sites with politically sensitive or even simply user-generated content, in what some see as an effort by the government to reassert control over new media.
China has banned a number of popular websites and Internet services, including Google's Youtube, Twitter, Flickr and Facebook, as well as Chinese content sharing sites.
First News Thread of 2010 :toot:
Porn's been banned in China for years.
I honestly read that as "...in internet child porn crackdown". Now I feel weird for being wrong. Why doesn't China put this much effort into tracking down Kiddie porn lovers instead of everyone else.

This was the real objective. Yay facism.
They don't want anything screwing up the system, so they do this. In a way, it's similar to what they did in regard to the Tienanmen Massacre: they removed it from their history. They do not acknowledge it, they don't teach about it, they don't let anone spread information about it, and put nearly everyone involved out of the way.
china sucks...
eh porn is banned here as well
but I really don't care
I have a feeling that the internet and media policies in China are where countries like Australia, Britain, and to a lesser extent, the United States, are slowly headed towards. More and more we're seeing media censorship in the supposedly "free" world, and it worries me.
I heard Chinese..
Are into..
Kinky stuff!
Yeeeeahh!!
So, 1 billion people live in china and I guess they think that only a few thousand people beat their meat to lewd pics and vids?
I'd say this is less of a crackdown and more of a PR stunt for China. "Look at us being morally upright, western world!"
They can be morally upright all they want.
*Goes and watches porn*

What use do you have for porn anyway? You're 104, I doubt you can get it up.
Thats why Chinesse men have small dicks
What the hell.
Anyways, China is a pretty cool country to visit but I wouldn't want to live there
what's happening in Iran needs to happen in china, just on a bigger scale. Also good luck hiding the Tienanmen Square Massacre from people now that they have the internet.
Am I the only one thinking that China's strict laws like this are actually making the country more productive?
Wait, does China have a forum running vBulletin 3.6/[sp]SQL/XSS[/sp] or lower?--
OH-- UM, I MEAN, UH--?

China and Asia has more internet users than America and Europe combined, and they remain remarkably healthy despite hourly usage being much higher.
I really do hate the chinese government, they're so uptight!
I just figured out this almost looked like the famous zombie killing achievement :v:

They will block the pictures, they always do. They blocked half of the pictures in most threads when I was in China.
This does not surprise me...
China's banning of pornography always makes me wonder if they actually care about reducing their population.
Does China not realize that people can just use proxies?
