My pal from down the hall has a ATI 4850 for sale (1GB version, don't know much else) for $85, brand new.
Here are my specs:
2GB DDR2 (forgot the frequency)
Intel Core 2 E7200 @2.53 GHz
(current GPU) GeForce 7600 w/ 256mb memory (ewwww)
I've been told that my bottleneck for gaming is definitely my graphics card. Would this upgrade be over/underkill? Is $85 a good price?
Yes, your GPU is pretty crap but your CPU (I originally had that same CPU before I upgraded to a Q9400) will bottleneck the 4850 in games like Crysis, L4D and Bad Company 2.

I wouldn't think so.

source games are piss easy to run

GPU, yes, CPU, no. When I had the E7200, my framerates would drop below 30 with a GTX 260.
4850 1Gb for 85 dollars ia a very good deal. Just make sure theres nothing wrong with it.

Also an option when it comes back in stock.

It's a pretty solid card, i'm currently running one of them. It handles everything i throw at it, most games are High/medium with maxed out AA. Source is maxed out on all options, a high end game like crysis or something else Medium/high. It all depends on how you tweak it, once that card gets in stock i'm going to order it and SLI my 8800GT's. Beats buying a new card right now and the card is cheap.

Yes????
Yes????
Yes
I have that card, $85 for a 1GB version is a good deal.

Ha, you fool. I ran TF2 on integrated ATI 3100 and a 2.6GHz Single-core.
He will be just fine.

This. I'm getting one too.
We'll match. :kiddo:
If you get 2 4850's and Xfire them, it is a great deal.

why get old cards
save up and buy a newer one
why get old cards

Because the performance for 200 dollars far exceeds any other card in that price range.

I have an E6600 and a 4870. Games run fine on highest settings. I don't bottleneck.
OP I hate you.
Just spent $70 on a 4670.
I got my 4670 for $45 a few months ago.

and I just got offered a 1gb GTS 250 for $50 from a friend.

There's nothing wrong with 4xxx series cards. They're still good.
I bought a 4670 a little while ago and it runs the games I want to play at max @ 1400x1050.
you have the 1gb version?
you have the 1gb version?
He got it in a combo so it was decently priced.
CPU is what matters most in Source games for sure. I have a Phenom X4 9500 and I get 20-30 frames on average with my 9800 GT when I get 60 FPS constant or above in MW2, Bioshock, etc on high or very high settings at 1920x1080. Only Source games I really excel in are the dated ones and the ones with multicore support.
That being said, a 4850 for $85 is an excellent deal and will improve FPS in most games that aren't as CPU intensive, for sure.
you have the 1gb version?
Yup. It's the 1GB XFX.
Only con is it's DDR2 :(
He got it in a combo so it was decently priced.
ok. I got a 512mb 4670 for $45 and it's a good card for the price. but mine is starting to struggle so I may get a GTS 250 1gb from a friend for $50.
