Crimea’s new Prime Minister says he is taking control of all military forces and government departments in the territory, declaring an official break with Kiev.
In a press conference Tuesday Sergey Aksenov, who was named Prime Minister last week, said the new government in Kiev was illegal and “mad”.
“We don’t trust the Kiev government and we asked help from the Russian federation to help us with the situation in Crimea,” he said. “We control everything, every activity.”
He asked all Ukrainian military forces in Crimea to lay down their arms and leave their bases.
Mr. Aksenov said Crimea will form its own military and he urged Ukrainian soldiers to join, promising them higher wages. If they don’t join, Mr. Aksenov said they will face legal action. “We control all military forces in Ukraine,” he said.

It's getting worse by the hour.
Goddamn.. after Russia commissions a bridge to be built to Crimea

Does he actually have all this power? And it's pretty screwed that they will face legal action if they don't join.
Wow Aksenov sounds like a huge asshole.
Is that even legal. How will the international community respond?
More importantly what happens if a base refuses to be cleared?

If we're lucky, intervention and/or heavy sanctions on Russia. If we're unlucky, "eeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh we'd like to say that we don't stand for this but we don't really want to actually do something have some sternly worded letters".
Is this being reported anywhere else? Not seeing anything on BBC.

My worst-case guess is an Embargo against Russia by the U.S. and allies. This is all too reminiscent of the Cold War.

here is the carrot

here is the stick
understand, da?
This is from the BCC Livefeed on the Ukrianian Crisis.
"22:09:
A court in Kiev has quashed the decision by the Crimean parliament to sack the region's previous government and appoint as prime minister the pro-Moscow leader, Sergiy Aksyonov"
Is that even legal. How will the international community respond?
It's not, the referendum didn't happen yet
Wait, breaks off? As in becoming independent? It's own country?
My worst-case guess is an Embargo against Russia by the U.S. and allies. This is all too reminiscent of the Cold War.
At this point I would be mildly surprised if this causes another Cold War.
If it does then I'm sorry Russian Fp'ers who hate Putin.

It became an island

Am I just misreading this or is that meant to say 'Crimea'?
I printed off a map a few days ago and it's already outdated, damn
It became an island
They sawed off the part of land that connects them to Ukraine. They're now in the process of paddling over to Russia.
If we're lucky, intervention and/or heavy sanctions on Russia. If we're unlucky, "eeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh we'd like to say that we don't stand for this but we don't really want to actually do something have some sternly worded letters".
Tbh I don't think that a lack of reaction from the rest of the world would be the worst option. It would suck, but a military intervention would be terrible in terms of deaths, etc.
Whatever happens I just hope the rest of the world won't punish Russia too harshly. You don't want to back an animal to a corner. Shit world war 2 would not have happened if it weren't for the world crippling Germany. It can make them do something even more stupid.
name it The Greater Crimean Republic.
Somebody's moaning for a droning.
NOTE: I still hope this all ends bloodlessly. I just had to use that as it was in my surplus gathering dust and I had to use it or else I'd end up losing the ability. Much like the US's surplus of military munitions. That was another one.
I can't find news of this anywhere else but this source. I'd take this with a grain of salt for now.
welp this is bad.
But what if the citizens of Crimea want this to happen?
But what if the citizens of Crimea want this to happen?
No self determination allowed.
Sergei Aksyonov is scum and a mafia goon. He has a past of dealing in fraud and other mob activities and is a huge asshole. If he stays as PM, there are most likely bad things to come. Also, he's good buddies with the head of the Supreme Council of Crimea (parliament), Volodymyr Konstantinov so expect a lot of fast-tracked bills to solidify their "independence" from the rest of Ukraine and Kyiv.
But what if the citizens of Crimea want this to happen?
Most of Crimea is ethnic Russian.
So most likely, unless I'm wrong of course.
So hold on - the guy who wasn't actually appointed the new prime minister says that Crimea should break away? He doesn't have that power, right?

So that explains why Russian soldiers were digging trenches there a while ago :v:
(although if it wasn't for this small part here Crimea would actually be it's own island, I think)
