A buddy gave me his 2008 macbook to fix. After not using it for a minute or so a window comes up prompting to restart, sleep, cancel, or shutdown and at the same time it turns the volume up one notch. I tried to reinstall snow leopard on it but the cd I used told me that Mac OS X Snow Leopard cannot be installed on this computer, even though it is already running 10.6.8. What do I do?
The cd won't let you install unless you format the hard drive using the disk utility on the cd
With the disc that was given to you, is it a retail disc with the print of a Snow Leopard on the front of it or is it a grey disc? A grey disc (which I suspect it is) with Snow Leopard will return the message "Cannot be installed on this computer" because it was made for another (newer) model of Mac.
I'd suggest starting up to Safe Mode and seeing if it works from there. If it does, you can create a new admin account and try accessing that from standard mode.
It sounds like the palm rest might be faulty if it isn't a software issue. Try turning the volume up and down using the controls on the keyboard and see if it prompts you to shutdown again.
