Icelanders will soon be able to publicly worship at a shrine to Thor, Odin and Frigg with construction starting this month on the island’s first major temple to the Norse gods since the Viking age. Worship of the gods in Scandinavia gave way to Christianity around 1,000 years ago but a modern version of Norse paganism has been gaining popularity in Iceland.
FYRIR VALHÖLL
Time to dust off my good 'ol Viking helmet then.
Fucking incredible. Man I love Viking stuff.
Also, Icelanders, how do i even pronounce "Ásatrúarfélagið"? :v:
Also, Icelanders, how do i even pronounce "Ásatrúarfélagið"? :v:
Ow-sa-tru-ar-fela-gith, the th being like the one in 'that'.
Also, Icelanders, how do i even pronounce "Ásatrúarfélagið"? :v:
I can only assume getting absolutely hammered will help.
a modern version of Norse paganism has been gaining popularity in Iceland.
I'm intrigued.
Look guys, I swear, we don't have any monks left... Our villages are crap, you won't want to plunder them... ... Please?
Something just came up with my mind about this, what happens if ww3 occurs and Iceland is the only country to survive the war. Now we have a new viking age.
“I don’t believe anyone believes in a one-eyed man who is riding about on a horse with eight feet,” said Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson, high priest of Ásatrúarfélagið, an association that promotes faith in the Norse gods. “We see the stories as poetic metaphors and a manifestation of the forces of nature and human psychology.”
Am I missing something because if this is their mentality then what exactly is the purpose of a temple, like what exactly are they worshiping?
Am I missing something because if this is their mentality then what exactly is the purpose of a temple, like what exactly are they worshiping?
It's the same as saying "I believe in God, but not some old man in a cloud looking down at me"
Am I missing something because if this is their mentality then what exactly is the purpose of a temple, like what exactly are they worshiping?
I think it's ultimately intended as a celebration of the culture.
Am I missing something because if this is their mentality then what exactly is the purpose of a temple, like what exactly are they worshiping?
it's mostly symbolic and a cultural thing
It's the same as saying "I believe in God, but not some old man in a cloud looking down at me"
Not exactly the same, doesn't have to exclude that either though.
I'm intrigued.
It's almost like religions are like fashion trends. Although I guess in a way they are.
The northland calls me home
Well at least they're worshipping multiple gods shaped in their own flawed image, rather than one single "perfect" administration program that seems almost mechanical.
“We see the stories as poetic metaphors and a manifestation of the forces of nature and human psychology.”
kinda exactly like Buddhism, they're not "worshiping" in the sense that their ancestors did but still pretty cool that there has been such a resurgence of interest in their culture also isn't like everyone in iceland related?
Yeeees!
Paganism feels more natural to me. I hope it starts to expand and take root right across europe.
Paganism feels more natural to me. Most of modern day paganism also hardly resembles the actual practices of early medieval and iron age peoples.
Paganism feels more natural to me. [editline]2nd February 2015[/editline] I don't really care too much, it's just that "pagan" gets often associated with Wicca, and witches we are not.
well this came out of the blue
Something like this should play at their funerals:
