Breaking down the voters per party alliances, although pro-government parties won most part of mayor offices, totaling 5,111,636 votes (49.24%), opposition alliance MUD won the main mayor's offices of the country, namely, Maracaibo (Zulia State), Valencia (Carabobo state), Iribarren (Lara state), San Cristobal (Táchira state), and Barinas (Barinas state), the latter is the hometown of late president Hugo Chávez; then totaling 4,435,097 votes (42.72%) nationwide. In Caracas, Venezuela's capital, the opposition alliance MUD candidates won the mayor's office of the Metropolitan Area of Caracas, and Baruta, Chacao, El Hatillo, and Sucre. Meanwhile, the Libertador mayor's office will continue under the leadership of ruling party PSUV.
Source: http://www.eluniversal.com/nacional-y-politica/131208/voters-turnout-in-venezuelan-local-election-hits-5892 opposition wins on the following state capitals: Caracas (capital city of Venezuela), Maracaibo (Zulia), Valencia (Carabobo), San Cristobal (Tachira), Barquisimeto (Lara), Merida (Merida), La Asuncion (Nueva Esparta), Barinas (Barinas). this is actually way bigger than it appears. for the PSUV to lose Barinas, hometown of Chavez on the very day of "Eternal Loyalty to the Supreme Commander Hugo Chavez" is simply a punch in the face to the PSUV hegemony and the cult of personality around Chavez. it's a minor victory, sure, but it definitely shows some promise for the future. the country is as divided as ever, split evenly in two parts, but at last it seems like the trends are turning in favor of the opposition and against Nicolas Maduro and his regime.
imo title should be changed to "Corrupt politicians win elections all across Venezuela"
sorry but no. i know personally one of the people that won (David Smolansky in El Hatillo), and that dude came from nowhere, he was a figurehead in the student movement, he graduated from the same school that I did, I was friends with his sister, and I know the dude is actually there for his city not for some quick bucks. he ran a TOUGH campaign having far less money than rival contestants, he wasn't even the MUD's candidate, he was running for Voluntad Popular, so he wasn't under the same level of exposure, and the guy still managed to win the election. if you're talking about jorge rodriguez you're free to call him whatever you want, but no, most of the guys that have been elected have integrity, and I have been able to see it, particularly in Caracas.
you sound like you would have wanted motherfucking winston vallenilla for baruta.
why you say so? I was just simply making a joke comment on how in so many years as mayor Eveling Rosales has done incredibly little for the city; as a matter of fact, the city's gone downhill in matter of public services and safety since she got in power. Now, I will make one serious comment: In my humblest opinion, Perez Pirela should have won simply as payback for all the shit the crybabies of MUD have flinged at Maracaibo in these elections. Everyone who's opposition in the city wasn't thrilled at all about voting for this silly bimbo of a woman. Everyone in the city was rallying up to launch Juan Pablo Guanipa as the opposition candidate. Guanipa has been a long time senator in the regional assembly, and is notorious for his charity works and is an actually educated person (unlike eveling). But then the boys at Caracas said they wanted to keep their little puppet and refused to give Guanipa official backing. 75% of marabinos wanted to have primary elections,100,000 signatures were collected and presented to MUD to hold primary elections, Local polls gave Guanipa a massive advantage over Eveling and even then MUD refused to listen to pretty much their most loyal followers in the country. There's basically no reason for me to support the MUD after such a terrible backstab to all Marabinos. So yes, I would have definitely wanted Pirela to win in my city. And no, there's nothing good about Eveling winning there. [editline]9th December 2013[/editline] oh, and why didn't guanipa launch its own campaign? Well because the guy's a fucking gentleman and does stand behind the very principles of "unity" the MUD takes SO much pride in.
