So I've been having some problems with my RAM usage lately on my gaming rig. I'm a bit worried because I can't even run videos in firefox anymore without the video skipping and lagging. And I can't play a game of League of Legends without getting a RAM overload black screen (well, I assume it's due to RAM as I can't think of another cause, however I've never been able to document it). I've never really had any problems with Steam games, but if my RAM is failing or something then I need to rectify the situation soon. Anyway, I guess my real question is (assuming my RAM isn't faulty and I just don't have enough): when I upgrade, should I try to get the same exact RAM as I originally bought? Does it even matter? What about the clock speed and memory size? My current RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277
You shouldn't be running out of memory while gaming or browsing with 4gb of RAM unless you're doing something extreme. I had a friend who always had Visual Studio, Runescape, TF2 and a dozen tabs in Chrome open while Skyping and only just ran out of memory. That said, there's no harm in upgrading to 8gb and matching modules would ensure maximum stability and no compatibility issues.
I highly doubt it's the RAM. Post specs and temps.
I recommend getting a memory manager like cleanmem, even if you get more RAM. Microsoft still seems to not be able to get Windows to manage memory properly, even in Vista and 7. http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem I have 8 GB of RAM and I used to have problems with firefox and flash using retarded amounts of RAM due to progressive memory leaks, and that program largely solved it. It reduced the average RAM usage on my machine from 60% to 16% with firefox, HL2, Source SDK, photoshop and 3ds max all open at the same time. All of the open applications seemed much snappier as well. People can go on that "free RAM is wasted RAM" rhetoric, but I notice a huge speed boost when applications don't have to constantly ask the OS to free up RAM for it to use.
Specs: CPU: i5 750 RAM: listed above. HDD: I don't even know. I salvaged it from a previous computer because I was unwilling to buy a new one and transfer all that data. It's 750 GB and runs 5700 rpm. Other than that, I'd have to take it out and look at it for more info. GPU: Here. Mobo: Here. PSU: Here. As far as heat, I don't have a program to measure that. Any suggestions? And now that I think about it, the LoL crashes could easily be due to the GPU overheating. It's pretty dusty is this room and I have to clean it out every few weeks or it gets really bad.
HWMonitor to check temps.
I doubt that would be RAM, It may be your GFX Card, Maybe over heating.

Holy shit, your +12v rail is FAR out of spec, and +5v is also way out. Do you have some nondescript Asian trash PSU? I would recommend turning the machine off until you bought a new PSU.

[editline]29th March 2012[/editline] okay nevermind my voltages are fine, the program is just reading them incorrectly apparently 16 V would have fried my system by now anyway
Hard drive bottleneck ITT. Happened to me.

Don't worry about firefox and flash videos lagging they're just cant work together properly its happens every once in a while
