For a console, yes it is. It makes sense to use lower energy components since studios will inevitably squeeze every last bit of power out of it.
I won't believe anything unless it comes from Sony themselves.
As long as it's reliable and doesn't have a pricetag like the PS3 then i don't see anything wrong.
I'm still having nightmares about the PS3s launch price.

Since they've waited so fucking long with this generation they should be able to get good hardware performance for a reasonable price, so with luck we'll see less half assed PC ports.

Yeah, pre-launch console hardware rumors are always ridiculous and get out of hand. I remember at one point different "reputable developer sources" were being reported as saying that the Wii U was simultaneously not as powerful as the last gen, as powerful as the last gen, and way more powerful than the last gen. :v:
If anyone else remembers the Game Boy Evolution, you should know by now not to trust rumors like this.
I wonder if it'll really use a HD 7970M. Consoles rarely use top-of-the-line GPUs since those produce quite a lot of heat. You don't want consoles to produce as much noise as laptops and desktops usually do under stress.
Which games can actually utilize 8 cores?
Which games can actually utilize 8 cores?
Technology moves fast, I'm sure games in the future will utilize it.
Which games can actually utilize 8 cores?
Games that are written to take advantage of 8 cores?
Doesn't make sense really since game recent consoles have never really been power efficient (Apart from Nintendo consoles)
Well yeah, but considering the use case it makes sense to try and save as many watts was possible.
7970M is actually really fucking amazing for a mobile card, currently the 2nd fastest on the market (680M or 680MX (to be released) is the fastest, but costs $400 more or so).
Gets ~6000 in 3dmark11, basically can do Metro 2033 at Ultra with 30 FPS.
But if you guys take a look at the sorts of notebooks that the 7970M, then you'll realize that they're all above $1300.
Makes me wonder about the pricetag on this thing. I doubt there's any way they can reduce it to $600 using the 7970M as a base.
no backwards compatibility?
no point in getting one anywhere near launch then i guess
I am happy for AMD if all these rumors about the xbox and ps4 are true.
That is millions of processors and gpus sold, even if the consoles don't do well initially.
It's gonna be a big-ass victory for PCs this time around if they can't get the pricing right, since mobile cards are still a fair bit less cost-efficient than a full-fledged desktop GPU, and building a PC will become a trillion times better then.
Wow that's pretty ni-

My laptop has a 7970M and it's a cracking mobile GPU, only downside is fucking enduro making it not use it's cores correctly but when it does work right, you're looking at performance that matches that of a 7850 and even the 7870 in some games.
Don't shoot it just because it's a mobile GPU, oh and just to note that the 7970M loves to run warm (looking at over 60-70c and even hitting just under 80c when max load), so this console is gonna be hot if they plan on using it.

it's also going to be $800 at launch so i doubt a lot of people will pick one up until the price drops.

There is no way it's going to be 800 dollars. No-one will buy that.
Pretty substantial piece of kit. This thing has the raw horsepwoer to, among other thigns, run KSP, something the KSP devs have said time and again the current gen simply doesn't have. It's also got enough ram to run a Gamebryo game properly :v:.
Looks like the next console gen is gonna be great. PC games are finally going to step into the 21st century. I'm excited.

Sony has learned their mistakes with the vita and ps3 launch. They probably won't fuck up as bad this time.

The vita launch price wasn't a bad deal (Same price as 3DS launch in the UK), it was just with the timing of the 3DS price cut Nintendo fucked sony over big time.
Wow that's pretty ni- Uhhh yeah that's... great?
The initial specs called for a 6570, be happy they splurged on the costs.

Console hardware costs a lot less than equivalent PC hardware due to the fact they're manufactured in huge numbers and sold at a loss. The PS3 almost failed due to the lack of interesting launch titles, let's hope Sony has learned their lesson and get some good games out early on the next console.
Does this mean that the PS4 might be using a PC CPU instead of weird architectures for once?
Does this mean that the PS4 might be using a PC CPU instead of weird architectures for once?
If it's an AMD CPU, it's going to be x86_64
To be perfectly honest with you I am definitely done with consoles after my 360. I will probably buy a PS2 at some point because it has such an amazing library of games, but for the most part, I'm decided on not buying any upcoming console. There is just no interest for me in buying these anymore.
Does this mean that the PS4 might be using a PC CPU instead of weird architectures for once?
Yeah pretty much.
So I figure they either sell this at a huge loss and hope they can make profits later in its life when prices for the tech go down, or they sell this at a gigantic price point and get no sales.

Yeah but they've made major strides in the way of idle power consumption, sub 20 watts on idle for some CPU's.
I've read elsewhere that the 8 cores can be turned on and off independently to save power whilst they're not needed.
