"No creative expression of artistic value has ever been carried out by former alcoholics and drug addicts," von Trier told the newspaper Politiken. It was his first interview since Cannes film festival organizers banned him from their event in 2011 after he joked he was a Nazi at a news conference to promote his film Melancholia. The interview was a front page story in Politiken, a Danish broadsheet, and ran to seven pages inside. Von Trier, who has shocked audiences with sexually graphic films such as Antichrist and Nymphomaniac, said he will be sober for 90 days as of Sunday and is going to meetings at Alcoholics Anonymous every day. The filmmaker was quoted by the newspaper as saying he used to drink a bottle of vodka every day but to be creative he combined the alcohol with different kind of drugs. "I can't recommend anyone to do the same. It is very dangerous and stupid in every way," he said. The father of four, who is married to a teacher, said in the interview he had come to a point where he had to choose between the human Lars Trier and the director Lars von Trier. The director adopted "von" while studying at the Danish Film School.
[Source: Reuters]
His daughter is pretty cool, so while he may not be able to produce quality movies for the next 90 days, I doubt that it's been totally dysfunctional.
Nothing will top his performance in Too Many Cooks
Probably afraid he'll make something that isn't overtly arthouse with which he can troll people.
A position I'd hate to be in. You produce artistic works that people get a lot of enjoyment out of, but only because you're frying your brains with whatever drugs.

Dude's still crazy even if he's sober, hopefully that's enough inspiration.
drugs let you explore different parts of your brain/the same parts in a different way i find i make the best beats after i smoke a lil bowl. just makes you think differently and it's really cool how you suddenly start having these cool ideas that would have never come to you sober. good for him for being sober though, addictions/habits like that die hard.

The reactions you see are the panic your brain has when its left without the more complex bits!
Drugs actually inhibit parts of your brain. The reactions you see are the panic your brain has when its left without the more complex bits!
"Drugs" is a pretty blanket term.
"Drugs" is a pretty blanket term.
recrational drug that are used to enduce hallucinogenic or euphoric state?
drugs let you explore different parts of your brain/the same parts in a different way i find i make the best beats after i smoke a lil bowl. just makes you think differently and it's really cool how you suddenly start having these cool ideas that would have never come to you sober. good for him for being sober though, addictions/habits like that die hard.
I don't know how you can rate this disagree. "Drugs help me be creative" is something that's really hard for a random internet user who doesn't know me to disprove. Personally, I've written a shitton of music under the influence of weed, to a lesser extent mushrooms (or analogues).
you guys really missed the point of my post. i'm not saying i have to do drugs to be creative, its just that being in a different state of consciousness gives you a different mindset to work with damn
recrational drug that are used to enduce hallucinogenic or euphoric state?
I'm sure he's not one of those tedious asses who'll call you out for using "drugs" because that could include Pepto-Bismol or whatever. I have to agree that "recreational drugs inhibit parts of your brain" is quite blanket. Heroin, weed, maybe, but Adderall? MDMA? I dunno
recrational drug that are used to enduce hallucinogenic or euphoric state?
that is still about as vague as you can get [editline]30th November 2014[/editline]
Drugs actually inhibit parts of your brain.

Drugs actually inhibit parts of your brain. I'm pretty comfortable with the idea that I inhibit my brain with drugs at least some of the time. Still lets me claim that drugs help me make my music.
Well psilocybin and cannabis can actually create new temporary brain links and even connect disconnected ones. Of course they damage brain as well but we still don't have much data on what these things actually do in long term.
I can't imagine someone sober would ever agree to directing Antichrist
I can't imagine someone sober would ever agree to directing Antichrist
I would.
Very sad to hear he's strugged with addiction for so long. He's one of the best filmmakers working imo, while I do hope he can continue to make outstanding cinema it definitely seems like it's for the best that he's addressing his vices.
