Woman Claims She Owns The Sun, Tries To Sell Land On It
55 replies, posted
A woman has been trying to flog plots of land on the sun, claiming that she owns it.
She had previously declared that the sun was hers in 2010, with courts in Spain even recognising that as a fact.
Maria used a loophole in the ‘Outer Space Treaty’ that says no country on the planet has a right to claim sovereignty over celestial bodies - but says nothing about individuals.
So Maria has been trying her luck again by posting up ads on eBay to sell the ‘land’ off to the highest bidder.
Sadly for her, she failed.
Bizarrely, Spanish courts have once again sided with Maria and told her she can take eBay to court for stopping the auction.
Okay then, I declare ownership of Uranus.
She sounds smart actually. Most people aren't finding loopholes and stuff so it might work to some dumb person
Dibs on pluto.
How do you declare ownership of celestial objects? I want one!
Probably went with it because what she's doing is completely harmless.
This is basically like when people sell star names or plots of land on the moon. You're paying for a meaningless certificate.
she hasn't been paying rent for five years, I own this galactic supercluster
The observable universe is mine, all of you need to pay 4 billion years of overdue rent
sounds like she's got her eyes on some pretty hot property
The sun seems like one of those places that you'd want to visit, but not a place you'd want to live at.

Law sure is weird. You'd think even harmless obvious exploits would get fixed rather than handwaved, but I guess nobody can be arsed to go through the process unless it's critical.
I'il be taking ownership of Neptun then fellow Facepunchers :v:

I know a certain tumblr individual who would not be okay with that
Is this the same woman from those news years ago that wanted a 5% cut on every solar panel sold?

I don't even see how it's even an exploit and why the spanish courts are going with it, "no country" supposedly also implies the people that reside in the country.

I sure hope not. Doesn't she know the dangers of staring at the sun?
She probably believes she's very smart, until the day she wakes up to a black helicopter in her back yard full of smug FBI agents that come to arrest her smug ass for trying to sell nuclear weapons on Ebay.

I'll pay in the next billion I promise.

I think we've had this exact same thread for the 3rd time in 4 years and people STILL haven't come up with new jokes.
For fuck's sake, people. Anyway, there's another treaty that does prohibit private ownership of any celestial object, this is literally non-news.
This is getting out of hand... I say we invade the sun and take back what SHOULD be in the hands of the people!
REVOLUTION!
I hereby claim the asteroid belt as my property and all materials mined from it shall be taxed
How do you sell plots of land on a ball of plasma gas?

She doesn't sound like the kind of a person who really knows what the sun is.
So if the sun has burned my car paint can i sue her?
She doesn't sound like the kind of a person who really knows what the sun is.
One day we will colonize the sun and you'll regret saying that
Does this mean she's liable for sunburn, skin cancer, and any interference caused by solar flares?
Damn, that's great. If the Spanish court really are so pedantic, then I bet suing her for that would work.
Probably went with it because what she's doing is completely harmless.
Completely harmless? What if she sold a bit of the sun to the wrong person, who knows what a terrorist could do with the sun.

I really want to see this happen.

Breaking: ISIS now operates from its brand new Sun-base.
The fact that she is suing eBay over stopping her auction shows how stable she truly is.
