Sources tell Variety that Villeneuve is in early talks to direct Legendary’s “Dune” reboot for the company. Legendary has not commented on the news.
While nothing is set in stone, this is exTREMELY likely to happen for a number of reasons. First off, Dennis doesn't have anything else lined up after the Blade Runner sequel. Secondly, he stated in an interview earlier today that he was looking to tackle more scifi projects following Blade Runner:
I’m doomed, I love sci-fi. I have two more ideas now that I would love to do.
And third and most telling, he straight up said this back in September a few months before Legendary announced it finally had the rights:
A longstanding dream of mine is to adapt “Dune,” but it’s a long process to get the rights, and I don’t think I will succeed.
Yeah i'd say this is pretty likely to happen. Can't wait.
Fucking dude has the work ethic of a god
He hasn't taken a break for years hows he still pumping out such good content
oh my FUCK I'd give anything for another Dune movie
[editline]21st December 2016[/editline]
maybe I'll finally be able to convince everyone around me to read it
Hell yes, I still haven't finished the novel but I loved what I read. I just keep getting busy and can't finish.
Also, it's interesting to note he's currently following in Ridley Scott's footsteps, except in reverse. Ridley Scott tried to make a Dune movie after finishing Alien in 1979 before the project went to shit (as Dune projects often do) and instead he went with Blade Runner.
Calling it now, Denis is slowly replacing Ridley and the other scifi project he mentioned is gonna be an Alien film. I'm on to your fukin game now Denis
Hopefully Frank Hubert's Dune gets the respect it deserves on the big screen. FOR MUAD'DIB!!!
I absolutely LOVED the Dune miniseries (its so truthful to the books) and absolutely hated the original movie (my god the cheese)
..pleaseletthisbereal..
I'm halfway through the 7th dune book, its an amazing series and that first movie was a major shitshow. It really deserves a good movie adaptation, heck you could make 8 movies out of it.
i only saw the david lynch one are the others any good?
DUNE should never be made (again) into a movie since they can't use Jodorowsky's version anymore.
In some alternate universe Jodorowsky made his movie, and it beat Star Wars to the punch, solidifying Dunes position as a sci-Fi behemoth in both movie and writing.
Never really watched any of the movies, read pretty much every single book in the dune series. I honestly am looking forward to a dune movie if its going to be done right.
I hope Brian Herbert keeps his stupid hands off it. As far as I'm concerned, his books are fan fiction.

They're literally based on Frank Herbert's outline, notes and direction. Quite a bit of the line by line writing is noticeably different but it seems fine otherwise, whats your issue with them? (or do you just mean those side story books i've never looked at)

Watch as nobody acknowledges that you ever tried to get them to read it.

His writing style is vastly different and amateurish. Plus we don't know what Frank's notes were. It could have just literally been "finish dune series".
This thread sums up my feelings pretty well.

Like, I always interpreted the Butlerian Jihad as humans relying too heavily on machines and AI, recognizing it made them weak, and purging it from society. I really don't think Frank, who's main messages of his books are ideas like "beware messiahs", "humans tend to want to destroy themselves", and "complacency leads to destruction", would make the end note of his series "terminators lol"

Wait.
How many Dune books are there? I have one that says "DUNE" on the cover and says it includes three "books" - Dune, and two others. Are there four more to get?
Yes. The first three however sit very well as their own trilogy.

In the forward to the first Brian book they explained that initially he had no interest in continuing it as he didnt know where to start, but they found notes in a safe deposit box years later that contained an "extremely extensive outline" with the full continuation of the main story with characters and stuff all fleshed out. I believe the other books like the prequels had no outlines with them though. I guess he could have lied about the notes but it doesnt seem likely.
im still yet to get through all brian's dune stuff so i'll have to see if my opinion changes at some point.
I hope we get more hella sweet baliset tunes

The Thing was the actors where great the music was great in the David Lynch, one it just felt rushed like instead of seeing some scenes we just had a narrator.

I haven't seen any of this guy's previous work but if Blade Runner ends up being really good I can't wait
Wait, he did Enemy? Holy shit. Did not know that
good fucking luck

everyone should watch the fan edits, they all tend to put in deleted scenes that greatly help the pacing and give the narration some effect, it's also just much better overall.

The Butlerian Jihad was always a rebellion against the thinking machines that had enslaved humanity. That isn't something Brian made up, it was established in the books Frank wrote.

Yeah pretty sure the major plot points/themes in the prequels are by and large cannon. I haven't read them since middle school and even then I recognized they were poorly written, but I still really liked them because they give a lot of backstory for things that are only vaguely implied in the main series. Dune is like LOTR, Frank Herbert made up this whole universe and then just told what he thought was the most interesting part of it even though a lot more was fairly fleshed out.

and to the surprise of no-one, it is now confirmed
Now attach Roger Deakins as cinematographer and watch movie nerds all over the world cream their pants several times over.
Dune series.
More than one film hopefully.
Villeneuve's a god, I adored Enemy and loved Arrival even more.
