there is no better jesus than that portrayed by Willem Dafoe imo

I saw Passion of the Christ about a month ago and just felt a strange sense that it was just there to portray violence and pain rather than any actual character in the jesus.

what the Willem Dafoe portrayal did was open the dude up and pretty much do what christians didn't want to be done, and that's actually re-interprate the character of jesus in the bibular sense (which has also been messed about over time).
It makes sense that it was controversial, but it isn't a movie that wanted to be "accurately bible-based". It even has a soundtrack of music from a LOT of cultures, even a style is present that is associated with Islamic culture.

I don't think a Jesus movie can better what Scorcese did, but if anyone else has any other examples, then by all means post them.
Does this count?

if that counts then this should count too:

:v:
Fucking love Jesus. I'd put him up there as one of the best characters that have ever been created.
It's just a shame he's been dulled down by religists.
If you want a human, heartfelt side and less "heroic/unrealistic", watch Last Temptation.

Jesus is the main character in one of the best gore movies ever made, that's how badass a character he is. The Passion of the Christ baby!
I love this movie

With Robert Powell as Jesus and Ian McShane as Judas
Possibly the greatest super hero in fiction. Gutted acts of god didn't feature in Avengers.
i need to see Ben Hur... it's one of my dad's favourites.

this makes no sense, Willem Dafoe isn't scary. :(

A buddy of mine wanted to see that in the theatre, so I went. The entire fucking time Jesus was being beaten (pretty much the whole movie) a woman behind me was sobbing and bawling and repeating "Oooohhhh Jeeeesuuussss!!" over and over.
jesus endured a lot of pain.
rip
Always meant to see The Last Temptation but I've just never been one for biblical stories.
Same thing with Ben-Hur.
I think I'll see these this weekend.
last temptation ain't really biblical though, it's a lot more human and realistic. E.G. less God, more jzs.

I wonder if the Last Temptation caused much fuss when it came out. The latter half as I remember pretty much re-writes the death and offers an alternative ending to the Gospels. Then again if the church is going to accept gay vicars when the good book condemns them I guess they should be ok with this.
On the topic I saw the docu film 'Jesus Camp about the evangelical summer camps in the United States of Yankee and that was quite funny. Worth a watch as its the same story of how religion and hysteria can move people and especially kids to stand up for things. Politics is never far away from such movements.

Indoctrination is the best method of education.
pfff, willem dafoe should be jesus again and tell these idiot ideologists to close their gobs.
I wish people could simply take away from the bible what I interpret from Jesus's message, which is "Don't be a dick"
what I interpret from Jesus's message
lol.
you really think the "bible" in this day and age accurately represents the dude's philosophy.
That book has been meddled with and warped over time, it ain't even funny.

From what is in the book, it's "Don't be an asshole"
Nobody can claim to know anything about Jesus any more than they can claim to know anything about Superman.

It caused a big fuss back then. Supposedly, Martin Scorcese and Wilhem Dafoe got death threats, same with the Pythons when they made Life of Brian. In fact, Life of Brian got banned in Sweden/Switzerland.
