[release] SCOTLAND NECK, N.C. — A 61-year-old Halifax County man died Tuesday, a day after police shocked him with a stun gun while he was riding his bike, family members said. Scotland Neck Police Chief Joe Williams said they received a call Monday night about a man who fell off of his bicycle and injured himself in the parking lot of the BB&T bank, 1001 Main St. The caller was concerned that the man was drunk. When Officer John Turner arrived, he saw Roger Anthony pedaling away along 10th Street. He followed Anthony in his patrol car, briefly put on his sirens and lights and yelled out of the window for him to stop, but Anthony continued to ride away, police said. Williams said Turner then saw Anthony take something out his pocket and put it into his mouth. At that time, Turner got out of the car and yelled for Anthony to stop. When Anthony didn't stop, the officer used a stun gun on him, causing him to fall off of his bike. Anthony was transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, where he was declared brain dead, his sister Gladys Freeman said. He was taken off of life support on Tuesday. Freeman said her brother was disabled, suffered from seizures and had trouble hearing. She said he was riding his bike home from her house on Sunday night. Anthony lived alone in an independent living community. Williams would not comment further on the incident, citing an ongoing investigation. Turner, who has been on the force for just over a month, has been placed on administrative leave. Scotland Neck Mayor James Mills is calling for the State Bureau of Investigation to look into what happened. "The best we've been able to determine is that he offered no threat," Mills said. Anthony was nicknamed "Rabbit" because of his big ears. "Why would you (use a stun gun on) a man on a bike? He didn’t do any crime. He wasn’t trying to escape. How (was) he going to escape on his bicycle?" Milton Freeman said.[/release] http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/10415249/ [release] Turner, who has been on the force for just over a month, has been placed on administrative leave.[/release]
what the fuck dude
-Bad Wording-
Are you fucking serious
Well, it hasn't been looking good for police brutality this month.
That's police brutality sure, but the title implies that he was literally killed by the Taser.
Because he was literally killed by the taser.
I was seriously pissed at first, but the one thing that made me understand some was this:
Turner, who has been on the force for just over a month, has been placed on administrative leave.
So it was basically a highly inexperienced officer who acted irresponsibly in this case. Its still terrible, and he could have and should have definitely done things much different, but I won't try and say it was malicious.
someone go taze those fucking cops
That's police brutality sure, but the title implies that he was literally killed by the Taser.
Um. Falling off of a bike and hitting your head from the effects of a taser/stun gun is literally being killed by it.
So the officer saw the man take something out of his pocket (the officer thinks the man is drunk, by the way), the officer is unaware that the man is deaf, and disabled. The officer then tells him to "stop" being unaware that he is deaf, gets out of the car and uses his taser. The man falls, unable to get up and is transported to a hospital where he was declared braindead. This is a short summary of what happened before anybody goes "fuck the police."
You're in a car, and he's on a bike Do you really have to tase him? Is it that hard to drive up next to him or something?
What the FUCK

So he handled the situation inappropriately and it resulted in another man's death. There certainly seemed to be no malicious intent on the part of the officer, and what occurred once he had tased him was out of his control. And while it doesn't compared to the loss of life, the officer will have to live with knowing that his inexperience resulted in the death of an innocent man.

It's just so fucking stupid how police are taught to use these tools instead of just using their brain.

I'm just being wary about people not reading the thread and jumping to conclusions.
OP, could you make a note in your post pointing out the fact that he had only been on the force for a month? You need to keep people from jumping to conclusions and being needlessly damning.
There really needs to be better procedures in place for dealing with deaf people. This reminds me of the guy in Seattle that was shot dead in the middle of the streets because he didn't respond.

Sarcasm cannot be read. Sorry Laferio.
Its all good.
Because he was literally killed by the taser.
Silly Willy, the cop killed him. Not the taser, the taser didn't have a say in this.

Why the hell are tasers still counted as non-leathal weapons? It give some (too many) police officers the mentality that they can be used without major consequences.

And so the angsty part of FP immediately shouts 'hurf police brutality hurf'. He gets a report for a drunk man, he sees him take something and put it in his mouth and he's not responding to orders. What's he supposed to do, think 'gosh, maybe I'll just wait and see what happens'? Yes, it's tragic what happened. But this is not police brutality, this is just a number of unfortunate events culminating into the unintended death of a man.
That asshole must have seen The Wicker Man too many time
I had bad wording there. It implies that he was killed by the Taser, not by the fall.
That about the equivalent of saying that jumping out of a plane 10km up without a parachute won't kill you, nor will the fall, the landing however might. The ground should be jailed, too many people die from hitting it.
"the mayor says thats not enough, and he is calling on the FBI" fuck yeah

Something like that's gonna hang overhead for the rest of his career/life.
Oh lord, this is the worst thing I've ever heard. I don't know why, but I burst out laughing though, possibly due to the absurd nature of it. I feel horrible. :smith:
