• Intel Buys McAfee for $7.68 billion USD
Well, we got our copy of McAfee Antivirus for $29, but it looks like Intel had something a little more substantial in mind. The latter has picked up the Santa Clara-based security / antivirus company for a cool $7.68 billion, which works out to $48 per share in cash. Intel informs us that it will function as a wholly owned subsidiary (under the control of its Software and Services group). This comes hot on the heels of the company's acquisition of TI's cable modem unit, and possibly signals a new focus on security for connected devices. "The cyber threat landscape has changed dramatically over the past few years, with millions of new threats appearing every month," said McAfee CEO Dave DeWalt. "We believe this acquisition will result in our ability to deliver a safer, more secure and trusted Internet-enabled device experience." This has added a wonderful new phrase to the Engadget lexicon (and possibly even a name for our new garage band): Cyber Threat Landscape. PR after the break. I still won't get my hopes up though.
McAfee. Out of all.
Gonna have to change the name and technology and everything and release it for free to convince me to download it
Maybe they have some kind of hardware based anti virus in the works? I read an article on HardOCP a while ago about Kaspersky working on a similar concept. Apparently it would be technically invulnerable to rootkits and it would have its own CPU and RAM. I wonder what they have up their sleeve.
Basically to summarize it, Intel bought McAfee so they can develop a new type of hardware firewall/AV?
Basically to summarize it, Intel bought McAfee so they can develop a new type of hardware firewall/AV?
probably
this is good.
Intel buys McAfee
Damn, I'm an Intel person, but also a Norton person. :frown:
McAfee: Intel Inside.
wow, I would've thought a couple hundred million but no where near 7 billion.
Yeah, I was surprised McAfee was worth that much.
Anyone ever realize how much business McAfee actually has??
Anyone ever realize how much business McAfee actually has??
I find it's installed on a lot of prebuilts / laptops.
I knew about this at morning, your kinda late :v: But anyways I hope Intel doesn't make it integrated into their motherboards.I mean, when you go to bestbuy to buy a new computer, you come home with that computer, turn it on for the first time and what do you see,you see mccafe installed, what do you do? You uninstall that shit and install something else.

Isn't it because they want to integrate firewalls or whatever into their processors? Just to make it seem like they have some new technology above and beyond AMD?
I find it's installed on a lot of prebuilts / laptops.
Its very well deployed in the enterprise field. McAfee actually makes a pretty good profit.
Hey maybe it will actually be good now... Naw no-one can un-fuck that shit.
Too much, what's McAfee's user base anyways? Is it even recorded? I thought they were the type of antivirus company that comes in on your computer as crapware or you buy at an office depot software section.
Nothing intel does will make me buy mcaffe.
interesting... *grabs popcorn*
McAfee: Intel Inside.
It's more like: Intel: McAfee Inside
Holy shit that's a lot of money.
This could prove interesting.
Too bad McAfee is crap... well from my experience anyway. Going to have to change the name and the whole technology behind it to make me get it again.
McAfee is actually worth 7 billion dollars?
if it were hardware based then id use it
I'd like a hardware based firewall/AV. Like cisco routers, but cheaper.
Microsoft Security Essentials It's free and it's better. :colbert:
After the whole debacle where McAfee destroyed Windows XP installations I'm surprised it's even used anymore in the enterprise.
