"Let me be clear - Britain may be a small island but I would challenge anyone to find a country with a prouder history, a bigger heart or greater resilience," he told reporters.
"Britain is an island that has helped to clear the European continent of fascism and was resolute in doing that throughout the Second World War.
"Britain is an island that helped to abolish slavery, that has invented most of the things worth inventing, including every sport currently played around the world, that still today is responsible for art, literature and music that delights the entire world.
"We are very proud of everything we do as a small island - a small island that has the sixth-largest economy, the fourth best-funded military, some of the most effective diplomats, the proudest history, one of the best records for art and literature and contribution to philosophy and world civilisation."
He added: "For the people who live in Northern Ireland, I should say we are not just an island, we are a collection of islands. I don't want anyone in Shetland or Orkney to feel left out by this."
Commenting on his paean to Britain in a social media message, Mr Cameron joked: "I'm thinking of setting this to music".

But a Conservative MP has waded into the row by saying on Twitter that President Putin "really is a tosser".
The MP that said Putin is a Tosser was Henry Smith, he also said that the BBC wouldn't let him call Putin a Tosser on BBC World Service.
We may be a small island, but we have big egos.
Don't diminish that fact for us Mr Putin.
Fuck you, Russian official. We're the only ones allowed to make fun of our country.
Good for him to stick up for something he is so proud of.
Wow what a dick.
(Not Cameron)

Cameron should show Russia the "British 1,500 yr port folio"...
We may be a small island country but we perfected imperialism over the last few centuries.
I don't think Russian politicians, or anyone associated with them, are in any position to criticise anyone else on any other issue at the moment. I'm not just talking about gay rights, but the circle-jerk that goes on when the prime minister and president swap every few years while they reminisce about the 'good old Soviet years'.

If I was Cameron I'd have been tempted to say something like this, I'm glad he took the high road instead
including every sport currently played around the world
But you didn't invent Baseball
He should have also given a shout out to America. Britain did give the world the greatest country in the history of mankind afterall.
Russia is one of the worst countries on earth so I don't know why he thinks he can talk shit about Britain.
I would rather live on a small island that no one pays attention to than a big, uninhabitable shithole that's been slowly slinking backwards through time.

Yeah we did

Rounders was the precursor to Baseball I believe.
Also we may have invented loads of sports, but we're not good at like any of them which is quite embarrassing.
Yeah we did

Obviously we are just doing the world a favour, we invented these things so others can enjoy them. Or something.
To be honest I'd rather live in Britain than in Russia (no offense to any Russians), we do have an impressive history in comparison to a lot of other countries.

woops didn't catch that, I meant Basketball. I recall watching an ESPN 30 for 30 film that said Baseball goes way back to France and it was a game monks played or someshit.

Nah, Dave won a few respect points here, but he's still a cock. Also fuck off Putin I'd take our rain, que's, tea and crumpets ever day over a fucking gulag.

USA! USA! USA!
GOD BLESS AMERICA!
I'd have preferred a mention of our history of (and continuing) contribution to science and technology over sports, but hey ho, whatever works.
Im not much of a patriot, but im pretty sure i prefer living on a small island nobody cares about if it means i can kiss my boyfriend in public, without getting arrested.
And what do people remember Russia for?
Being a country that can defeat enemy's by their mere weather, then just flinging millions of peasants at weakened enemy's , both during the Napoleonic wars and WW2 battle for Stalingrad.
Didn't work for them so well during the winter war.
Also communism, which they nicked from french and European politic philosopher's
I don't like where this thread is going.
They are looking for the second crimean war but over Syria how well did that turned out for you last time bald rusian cuntsack washer???
That no one pays attention to? Based on what? Pretty sure Britain has been pretty relevant.

We're the grandfather of the world, telling all the kids about the games we made up when we were kids then setting on the bench getting teary eyed when we see how well they can play it.
Your relevance on the world stage has faded somewhat after world war 2. But saying that no-one cares about Britain is a bit of a fib.
that has invented most of the things worth inventing
Huh. Never knew that about us.
