The racing field dwarfs the 40-ton machines and is clouded by smoke. The announcer’s deep voice struggles to cut through the booming guns and whistling signal rockets, and the engines’ roar is deafening as brightly-painted killing machines thunder past, each leaving a plume of dust in its wake. The idea is pretty simple – just like a regular biathlon, only with tanks. The Russian military unleashed this new sport on the world this week, delivering an event that was part sales pitch, part post-Soviet bonding exercise. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it won, trouncing rivals from three post-Soviet countries – Armenia, Belarus and Kazakhstan – in Saturday’s superfinals. Surprise Victory “I don't know how we did it. Just sat there in the machine going all out, thinking, the whole of Russia is watching us,” Pvt. Igor Artemyev, the Russian team’s driver told RIA Novosti after the race. His left control lever stopped working, and he pulled his machine through while maneuvering with a single track, the 19-year-old conscript – a round-faced, sturdy fellow with the wholesome looks of a rustic fairytale hero – said. To the spectators however, Russia’s crimson T-72B seemed to breeze through the racing ground like it was a Saturday morning trip to a supermarket. The crew commander in Kazakhstan's blue tank sprained his arm handling the main gun shell. After a replacement was found it bounced back, coming in second, just under a minute after Russia. Belarus finished third, Armenia last. “It was new to us. We've done all these exercises before, but never at the same training run,” Kazakh gunner Aidyn Kalioldin told RIA Novosti after the race. “The Russians handled it better. But we would have won if the race had taken place in Kazakhstan,” Kalioldin added with a smile.
http://en.rian.ru/features/20130817/182825523/For-the-Win--Russia-Triumphs-in-Tank-Biathlon.html
gay [editline]17th August 2013[/editline] Wait no this is Russia, I take that back.
That's a little bit different. Cool I guess though.
I'm glad their compatriots are taking it with good faith. Can't wait to see what happens with a global competition.
"Armenia, Belarus and Kazakhstan" They don't exactly strike me as countries that have well-trained tank crews, or at least better-trained than Russia's. Then again, the driver of the Russian's tank is just a 19 year old conscript, so perhaps it wasn't such a large gap in skills between teams. This particular line I found highly amusing: "Any metal band would surely sell their souls for the chance to play this gig, but the live soundtrack to the event sounded prehistoric. Some of the Soviet tunes played were so old that one explicitly praised Stalin."
damn, really thought Kazakhstan was going to win
glorious soviet steel saves the day once again
Pravda wins again!
T-72? they better not be using those against the Leopards and Abrahms tanks.
T-72? they better not be using those against the Leopards and Abrahms tanks.
Don't underestimate the motherlands mighty steel! [editline]17th August 2013[/editline] I would like to see this done with all military vehicles
T-72? they better not be using those against the Leopards and Abrahms tanks.
I'm guessing they used it for this one because all the countries participating were guaranteed to have one.
I'd like to see an Abrams in the mix, and a Leopard 2 for that matter
Armenia, Belarus and Kazakhstan
Whoop-dee-fucking-doo, what a surprise
metal.
I think not
Did those rainbow coloured tanks get impounded

Red ones go faster.
I'd like to see an Abrams in the mix, and a Leopard 2 for that matter
That comes later on. It will be Italy, Russia, Germany and the US.
That comes later on. It will be Italy, Russia, Germany and the US.
Oh, Germany joined? I hope UK joins too, then we have all the big players and their big guns.
Red ones go faster.
But of course they do comrade. Red is color of the great Union!
Oh, Germany joined? I hope UK joins too, then we have all the big players and their big guns.
But then it would lack France and Israel, and maybe Japan
That comes later on. It will be Italy, Russia, Germany and the US.
They should get China, the UK, Japan and France involved and start a military Olympics type thing.
But then it would lack France and Israel, and maybe Japan
I dunno, France doesn't seem to like being a part of NATO sometimes, and Israel isn't, or Japan. It would be neat if they joined too though.

this isn't a biathalon the russian tanks are much better upgraded than their counterparts who are probably still fielding soviet era main battle tanks without any of the newer generation retrofits and upgrades. this is more like the qualifier for the tank biathalon with the u.s. and canada
It's funny because their stuff was breaking and they still won.
The irony of the article's picture :v:
rainbows arent gay in russia
T-72? they better not be using those against the Leopards and Abrahms tanks.
"Abrahms" please stop doing this, it's Abrams, not abrahams, not abrahms. just Abrams
I really want to be able to bet on this
