Depending on whether I'm still in warranty/have the documents for my card, I may not be able to RMA it. I'm looking for a replacement card that's under £200 and isn't too much of a step down, but able to handle Crysis and the like on High/Ultra on a 37" HDTV, 1920x1080 of course.
Approx 325 USD right? You could try picking up an HD5850?
Actually if I'm correct an HD5850 should be an upgrade from your 9800GX2, it's faster than the GTX285, and the GTX285 was faster than the GTX280 which was in turn faster than the 9800GX2.
Budget stretching, but it looks decent.
Damn, what's with you and hardware you always have bad luck considering that first ram died before lan and now your gpu.. :( replace it with a 275? i can't really tell the difference of nvidia cards yet..

Or can the mobo also take ATI? Then go for a 5850.
It can take ATi, just not crossfire. And yeah, my hardware problems were frustrating but now it's just getting funny.
Truth is that 9800GX2s also have a tendency of dieing early, as most cutting edge cards used to.
Any one remember most of the 7000 series?
get a 5850 - £209 last time I checked
If it has no warranty, stick it in the oven :P
I had a milder case of this with my 8800GTX
After I got a replacement GTX260 I read that putting it in the oven fixes some issues like this.
So, anyways, I did it and it worked.
Gas mark 5.5 for 8 minutes. You need to remove the whole heatsink, Pics of mine below.

Sorry for the image spam, some might find it useful though.
Anyways, I've been running the card now for a few weeks and I haven't had a single error yet. My GTX260 is in it's box upstairs.
How does it work?
Solder Reflow, There is a massive thread on it on a forum somewhere...

my 7300GS lasted for a year, in comes the 7600GT lasting for a year and more :v:
Most cards will be a step-up from the 9800GX2. It wasn't exactly a blockbuster(Along with the 9 series Nvidias in general) A 4890/5850 would be a good replacement.

2 years does seem a little short. My 6800GT's still work though, as does my dad's 7950GT.

Yup, a year out of warranty.
Has there been any news on when NVIDIA's 300 series is released?
No, and trust me, when they will release them, they will be expensive as fuck and will NOT beat Ati
Get a 5850... It's a upgrade from your card, you will get better FPS and Ati's cards will last forever
I don't care about the cards themselves, I care about the inevitable price war they'll bring.

Technically considering the sheer material cost and the drop in yields that is going to be incurred by Nvidia's usage of a stupidly huge and complex die, it's fairly safe to say that it's going to be stupidly expensive. Whether it'll be inferior to the HD5800 series, that we'll have to wait and see.
I don't foresee very great performance from Nvidia though, considering how much of the die they dedicated to just CUDA related features that are only going to be used by enterprises and data centers, it's not going to be quite the most efficient card around.
Nothing left to do but wait and see.
AMD cards lasting for ever is a pretty dumbass statement though, while a few G80/G92/G94 Nvidia cards did have a tendency of failing because of bad batches and the use of a high lead solder relative to AMD cards, saying that AMD's cards will "last forever" is pretty inaccurate.
Eh, I think I'll pre-order a 5850 before AMD push the price up. Thanks guys.
Didn't they already raise the price about 20$?
Didn't they already raise the price about 20$?
They raised it $10 on Newegg about 2 weeks after the original launch.
Also don't throw that card away
I'm not, it's not dead dead, it just crashes/prevents booting of the pc, so it might be fixable by a third party.
In other news, almost raged when I went to order a HD5850 and the price rose by £40 (one card jumped from £360 to £520), but found another e-tailer that had an Asus one for £201.
Once again, thanks for the advice guys.
-derp- rate me clocks.

Lolwut. It was never £360 for a 5850, they've hovered around £209 - £220.
Well PC world might charge £360 for a 5850.
I found an XFX one on Dabs for £198 :banjo:
