All Arab and Muslim athletes agree on withdrawing against Israeli players because Israel is an occupying country and playing against its players grants Israel an official recognition. Fahmy's decision received a large-scale welcome from Arabs in general and Palestinians in particular. Abdussalam Haneyya, member of the Palestinian Football federation, announced establishing a mural of Fahmy’s photo in appreciation of her position.
Sucks for her, I guess. Work for years and get accepted to compete in the goddamn Olympics, only to essentially throw a political fit over who you play against? Boo fucking hoo.
You'd hope that the Olympics would transcend politics. I guess not.
You'd hope that the Olympics would transcend politics. I guess not.
the olympics have a history of being affected by politics
I have 0 sympathy for people who pull this crap, I hope that even if she tries to come back in 4 years the IOC or whatever governing body Judo has tells her to fuck off.
Should take more example from the Korean girls taking selfies together and promote unity rather than division. [editline]14th August 2016[/editline] Hell, the USA and USSR used the Olympics has a pseudo battleground and created two of the most dominant sports programs on earth in order to one up each other. If you hate Israelis so much you think you'd love the chance to beat one up on the international scene and prove your dominance.
Should take more example from the Korean girls taking selfies together and promote unity rather than division.
it's different when the DPRK doesn't steal land, encourage illegal settlements and the killing of teenagers of the other country (not to mention koreans speak the same language and were united for thousands of years and hebrew and arabic are completely different seeing as jews just popped in less than 100 years ago into land that was arabic for more than a thousand+ years)

Hebrew and Arabic are very similar languages as well.

But you're right, it is a bit of a different situation. I just think this athlete is acting like a child.
You'd hope that the Olympics would transcend politics. I guess not.
Yeah, absolutely not. To some of these people, Israel isn't a country that should even exist. Imagine if ISIS or Al-Qauda established a nation, and got a place of representation in the Olympics, thus the Olympics recognizing its a legitimate country. Obviously the U.S. wouldn't recognize it, so do you think someone sent to represent American would be tempted to refuse to compete? I'm not condoning the actions, mind you, but it's only so simple from our side.

Stop trying to justify their actions. [editline]14th August 2016[/editline]
Yeah, absolutely not. To some of these people, Israel isn't a country that should even exist. The single most free state, for Jews and Muslims, in the entire Arab world is the same as literal theocracies who oppress women and minorities as a manner of law.

I think it's possible there's another side to this. If i was an Arab or Muslim athlete I'd have to ask myself what's the chance I'd be killed or attacked for treating an Israeli athlete like any other? Making a point about the Olympics being about sports not politics isn't worth my life.
Sucks for her, I guess. Work for years and get accepted to compete in the goddamn Olympics, only to essentially throw a political fit over who you play against? Boo fucking hoo.
This part
All Arab and Muslim athletes agree on withdrawing against Israeli players because Israel is an occupying country and playing against its players grants Israel an official recognition.
Makes me believe that it's assumed when you become a part of an Olympic team that you will forfeit the match. There are probably very unpleasant consequences for ignoring this contract.
hey if neither side recognizes the other then nothing will ever get accomplished, the arab world needs to get over itself and stretch out a branch to israel, and israel should recognize that it has to get its shit together and stop demonizing arabs for political gain still if the saudis require their women track athletes to wear 15 lbs of clothing which pretty much prevents them from even finishing most of the time, then I think its safe to assume that they aren't above self sabotage

They also shell SK on occasion, and are always threatening them. They're not on good terms, but their athletes can get over it.

This is kinda funny when you think about the possibility of an Israeli athlete winning Gold without even participating because his or her opponents just happen to from countries which don't recognise Israel lmao
Israel isn't religious though and comparing its formation to ISIS's formation is ignorant at best.
Needed to hop on this one Is not religious....as in...?
Never realized the DPRK had an olympic team
Needed to hop on this one Is not religious....as in...?
Secular government that doesn't follow religious law.
You'd hope that the Olympics would transcend politics. I guess not.
what's the fucking point of this game if it doesn't
Secular government that doesn't follow religious law.
The country was founded for Jews, by Jews, I'm fairly sure any Jew can get Israeli citizenship just by being Jewish, and it has the Star of David on its flag. It's a Jewish country no matter what the "official" stuff says.

It's a Jewish country no matter what the "official" stuff says.
Ethnic Jews, not religious. The law of return doesn't follow the religious definition of who is Jewish and there have been cases of religious Christians being allowed to be Israeli citizens under the law of return BC of a Jewish grandparent.
it's different when the DPRK doesn't steal land, encourage illegal settlements and the killing of teenagers of the other country (not to mention koreans speak the same language and were united for thousands of years and hebrew and arabic are completely different seeing as jews just popped in less than 100 years ago into land that was arabic for more than a thousand+ years)
seeing you try to paint north korea as a better country than israel is just as hilarious as it is terrifying. do people actually believe this? are you trolling? i legitimately can't tell, holy shit lmao. It's an ethnic rule, not a religious one. iirc, the atheist population in Israel is higher than that of the US, anyway.
this is stupid this is the olympics pretty sure the people who are doing this are just doing this for attention
