The United Nations has published its first plan for managing the extraction of so-called "nodules" - small mineral-rich rocks - from the seabed. A technical study was carried out by the UN's International Seabed Authority - the body overseeing deep sea mining. It says companies could apply for licences from as soon as 2016. Under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the ISA was set up to encourage and manage seabed mining for the wider benefit of humanity - with a share of any profits going to developing countries.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-22546875 I hope there are proper controls on companies when they begin, they might end up causing problems down there.
We should set up our own Facepunch company for that
It'd be cooler if they went down in deep-sea scuba gear and used pickaxes.
I hope there are proper controls on companies when they begin, they might end up causing problems down there.
the one thing that ended up topping the BP oil spill was when Greenvale Deep-Sea Mining Incorporated accidentally poked Cthulu in the rear with a submarine
I hope there are proper controls on companies when they begin, they might end up causing problems down there.
wishful thinking
We should set up our own Facepunch company for that
I have 4 million skill points in EVE devoted to industry, does that make me qualified?
It'd be cooler if they went down in deep-sea scuba gear and used pickaxes.
I'll begin investing in Aqua Affinity Helmets
If you're going to go down into the sea and start hitting rocks please be careful not to hit R'lyeh, the last thing we need is angry elder gods on our asses.
Sounds like we're gonna pollute the ocean much more if this becomes a thing.
I have 4 million skill points in EVE devoted to industry, does that make me qualified?
I'm level 54 mining in Runescape, count me in too
Watch as fisheries become completely uneatable due to heavy metals stirred up.
We should set up our own Facepunch company for that
I own a pickaxe, where do I sign up
Aquaminecraft?
I'm level 54 mining in Runescape, count me in too
PFF ameture, I am lvl 450 mining in wow too bad deep space mining is cooler [editline]19th May 2013[/editline] also it has a much Lower chance of killing our oceans
Watch as fisheries become completely uneatable due to heavy metals stirred up.
Watch as everyone in this thread makes unfounded predictions of corporate negligence.
Watch as everyone in this thread makes unfounded predictions of corporate negligence.
Watch it come true as deep sea mining becomes a thing.
Watch as everyone in this thread makes unfounded predictions of corporate negligence.
Not exactly unfounded, considering untreated mine spilloff, collapsing mines, oil spills and a myriad of other environmental disasters. The possiblity of fucking up is very real, and needs to be managed strictly.
Screw deep sea mining, I want sub-crust mining!
People have been talking about mining nodules for decades, and nobody has made it cost effective. The original cover story for the Glomar Explorer was mining seafloor nodules.
i have my mining cape in runescape everyone move aside please.
Sounds like we're gonna pollute the ocean much more if this becomes a thing.
And no one will continue to give a shit, and then we'll simply fuck ourselves over even faster with increased pollution. [editline]19th May 2013[/editline]
Watch as everyone in this thread makes unfounded predictions of corporate negligence.
Because it's true 99% of the time.
Sounds like we're gonna pollute the ocean much more if this becomes a thing.
This will do much more than pollution, this will destroy miles of the oceans ecosystems, noise alone destroys whales an dolphins breeding grounds and communication, imagine what will happen with undersea ones
I'll explain How this is done when I get home but basically they got a giant robot and a vacuum. Tge robot scrapes through the crust and ore veins and sucks it up with the vacuum. At least that's one method I've seen. It might cause localized issues depending on what is being mined. Copper for example is toxic to crustaceans. Theres also issues with stiring up sediments but we do that million times a day with bottom trawlers. [editline]19th May 2013[/editline] It looks like in this case they're just pulling up rocks which should be minimally invasive depending on location.
It'd be cooler if they went down in deep-sea scuba gear and used pickaxes.
You mine slower underwater so you'd have to take a fencepost with you and put it beside your head
We just need to mine enough to counter the rising sea level
This comes to mind when I think of Deep-sea mining (If anyone followed the ARG back then for this film)

That's pretty cool. A leap forward in oceanic engineering.
Would you kindly build a underwater city for me while your at it, i'll name it "Rapture"! [editline]20th May 2013[/editline]
Watch as fisheries become completely uneatable due to heavy metals stirred up.
Fish will be head banging all day on it!
Does this mean Rapture could become a possibility?
