The patch was released today. LINK
-Fixes graphical issues on PS4 and Xbox One introduced after Title Update 1.08. -Corrects an issue where some players’ character appearances would change periodically -Fixes an animation issue where another player aiming on your screen would not play the correct animation
Some people thought it was intentional, some thought it was a bug. Now we know for sure.
I thought they fixed it last week
Rockstar saying it was a bug doesn't mean it wasn't intentional. If anything they removed subtle things to get a performance boost thinking no one would notice but then everyone noticed and backpeddling occurred hardcore.
I thought they fixed it last week
No, that was the car damage glitch they fixed. This is the POM (parallax occlusion mapping) glitch. I think it was a mistake. With the heists update, they drastically improved the quality of the apartment and garage entrances. They might have fucked something up when they did that.

They've broken things several times before with patches.
Nothing this widespread graphically not to mention everything that was missing were not just acting incorrectly they were flat out gone and all were fairly subtle aspects that to most players would be negligible. I'm not saying rockstar definitely did it on purpose but i am saying i absolutely wouldn't put it aside them from doing something like this in the name of discrete performance boosts.
I think it was a mistake. With the heists update, they drastically improved the quality of the apartment and garage entrances. Those will have messed with handling.dat and it either was ignored to get heists out on time, or wasn't noticed.
But the game was already a stable 30fps so there wasn't a reason to downgrade anything anyway.
For a game like this rockstar is constantly looking for optimization anywhere they can especially with the constant addition of even more content. It's fully possible that they did downscale the graphics, just as possible that it was a bug. Making an entrance to a garage look nicer isn't going to make the graphics themselves tank like they apparently did.
And the car damage is explained by the fact that they added new vehicles and ones that are armoured/hard to deform by default. Some vehicles that were already present would deform more easily than other and vice versa. the vehicles would just act as if they had a higher armor rating added by the player is LSC but by default. How would that break car damage unless somehow they changed all the cars by default to have higher ratings.
As long as they fixed their mistake, I don't see a reason to argue. None of us work for Rockstar so we don't know what happened.
Holy shit dude you're delusional. Why is it so hard for you people to believe that this whole thing was a glitch?
I'm delusional because i think it was odd that more than just a few negligible graphical aspects were missing? It could very well have been a glitch, i said this, but i also wouldn't put it aside rockstar to try and boost performance with the additional content by stripping a few things. That's optimization for you. How is it delusional to think a game developer would strip a few things in the name of performance? EDIT: I'm not screaming rockstar should have their heads on a pike and they're bastards while listing out a conspiracy theory here.

For all we know they accidentally flipped a switch for the graphical settings, similar to how Watch Dogs had a literal "E3 graphics" switch.
For that matter, i honestly want to know how adding a car with higher damage resistance would screw over car damage for every vehicle. Like if i'm wrong in what i said above about it, i want to know why i'm wrong, you rated and moved a long and i keep getting ratings with no one explaining. If i'm wrong tell me why i'm wrong i'd actually like to know this.
Yeah but you're ignoring that they already met their 30fps target so why would they randomly downgrade the game 5 months later for no reason and then undowngrade it a week later?
This glitch didn't give any performance boost at all so thinking it was intentionally done to boost performance is completely nonsensical.
Did anyone ever put out any benchmark numbers or anything? Serious question [editline]2nd April 2015[/editline]
Yeah but you're ignoring that they already met their 30fps target so why would they randomly downgrade the game 5 months later for no reason and then undowngrade it a week later?
I'm not ignoring that, game developers like rockstar will ALWAYS be looking for ways to further optimize a game they're directly supporting and making. Its why weeks and weeks on you'll still see patches for 'improved performance' even on last gen consoles. Yeah they hit their goal and it works, but devs like them keep it going for awhile while they have the resources.
Did anyone ever put out any benchmark numbers or anything? Serious question.
That one website I can't remember the name of that always does analysis videos did one (Europe Games or something), and found that PS4 & Xbone versions were mostly stable with rare drops during gunfights (Xbone version) or at intersections (PS4 version) Apparently the cause of it on PS4 was a streaming issue that was fixed? Unsure if they fixed the Xbone version's occasional dips in large gunfights.
Its why weeks and weeks on you'll still see patches for 'improved performance' even on last gen consoles.
Those are mostly with games that have frequent drops (like AC Unity) or overly long load times (like Bloodborne) though.

There's still a significant edge for the current gen versions even with some graphical features stripped.
As long as they fixed their mistake, I don't see a reason to argue. None of us work for Rockstar so we don't know what happened.
sometimes I think this community is too cynical

It's not bound to games that perform terribly.
See now we're actually getting somewhere, but were these done between patch 1.06 to 1.09 as these graphical issues have been disappearing since patch 1.07
It was done at launch day I believe.
It's actually a really really really normal thing for devs to do for any game especially after a bit from release. Even AC Unity's patches improved framerate from 'abysmal' to 'barely playable' without reducing any graphical effects.
It was done at launch day I believe.
Then that doesn't help you or me. It doesn't show that by disappearance of these features there was any performance gain or loss as opposed to past updates. So its a moot point on both parties.
JESUS CHRIST Viva. There was a public outcry after the so-called "error", and Rockstar fixed it. Yippee, except you're acting like it was some sort of conspiracy? Just accept the fact that mistakes happen, and Rockstar fixed it. If it were some other developer like Ubisoft it probably wouldn't have even got fixed, so be thankful.

I made some edits to police and taxi vehicles to make them super squishy, like they were literally made with tin foil, and it took three different tweaks before the game would even start. Of course, I was working with third party modtools and hastily decrypted files while R* has all the good shit, but still. If me making a slight tweak to the squishiness value of 3-4 vehicles can make the entire game shit the bed I can easily see R*'s attempts to configure DLC vehicles borking features as well.
Wow, how dare they make a mistake and then fix it.

I can see that happening but i still dont think having a vehicle added with higher damage resistance would entirely break car damage like it did as there were already cars within the game that had higher damage resistance. If anything the probably took the profiles of other vehicles with slight tweaks.
Can't blame people for being cynical after the shitshow in gaming that was 2014
Can't blame people for being cynical after the shitshow in gaming that was 2014
Not to mention rockstar has been really obstinate about fixing some things lately. It took awhile for them to even acknowledge the turbo glitch and over a month to actually fix it. But they fixed it at least.
