Fuck yeah, Science! Scientists manage to 'delete' HIV virus from infected cells/human DNA
For the first time, researchers in Philadelphia have found a way to completely delete the HIV virus (pictured) from human cells by ¿snipping¿ them out. The process could also provide a cure for other latent infections
The team of Temple University School of Medicine said the breakthrough marks the first successful attempt to eliminate latent HIV-1 virus from human cells – and could be a cure for other latent infections.
‘This is one important step on the path toward a permanent cure for AIDS,' said Kamel Khalili, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Neuroscience at Temple. 'It's an exciting discovery, but it's not yet ready to go into the clinic. It's a proof of concept that we're moving in the right direction,' he added.
In a study published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr Khalili and colleagues detail how they created molecular tools to delete the HIV-1 proviral DNA.
Well, it's a start, at least.
Science be praised!
I thought the cure was to inject $50,000 in liquefied cash into your bloodstream.
South Park lied to us!

Everyone knows that the only cure to HIV is a synthesis cocktail of the essence of thousands of Facebook 'Likes', tumblr notes, and hastag tweets injected directly into the bloodstream of underprivileged children.

I'm very excited for this news. I certainly hope it doesn't turn out like other #curedcancer articles that don't end up having any real weight afterwards.
Best OP for such a thread; also. Neanderthals don't have shit on our molecular tools
To be able to cure HIV-1/AIDS would be a major stepping stone in medical science ; considering the nature of it as a retrovirus. This research is good towards lentiviruses in general
So this news is welcomed
Take that, Jesus.
Hopefully Cancer is next
And Ebola also
They will never be able to cure Dire Aids

They won't be able to because there is no such thing :v:

what about super aids? can it cure super aids???
what about super aids? can it cure super aids???
we use napalm for that

Yes, but not space AIDS, sadly.
I like where this is going, a lot of promising results have appeared in the last years.
One that I find interesting is the DRACO antiviral which is being worked on at the moment. It's easy to explain how it works: the DRACO protein finds cells with longer RNA-helices than normal cells, which is unique for virus cells replicating. Then it attaches itself, and signals the cell to self-destruct before the virus is further spread.
They say you could cure a cold in hours

We're due for a Penicillin for viruses. I hope it's as cool as this one.
That being said, it should never be used for non-lifethreatening viruses like the cold. If we've learned anything about how Penicillin affects bacterial evolution, we should be very careful to preserve our most powerful antivirals.

Good luck with that :v: No matter the regulations or requirements, people will still misuse it enough that we'll see resistance occurring sooner or later.

it can be life threatening though.
Can viruses really get "resistance", so to speak? They can change their DNAs to not match any common patterns but other than that iunno.

they can. Viral resistance to common antiviral agents is a developing trend now.

on viruses growing resistance, how could a virus combat something like this?
Can't wait until we finally cure all STD's and can finally stop using condoms.
But Ill be dead before then so crap :(

Unless a virus completely changes how it replicates, impossible.
maybe shooting down that plane over Ukraine did us some good.
nothing like a fresh pair of eyes

Yeah! Science Bitch!

If you read the article, this is an experimental finding. There's years to go before it even gets close enough for human approval. Also, that was a particularly tactless post, trying to squeeze humor out of people dying.

I squeeze humor out of dead people every day for breakfast
I didn't know Oompa loompas were scientists.
I thought HIV mutates too quickly for there to be a definite 'cure' for it. Is that not the case?
I thought HIV mutates too quickly for there to be a definite 'cure' for it. Is that not the case?
while this is true i think that it always injects its dna in the same area so i guess they just target that area or something.
When HIV is cured can you kick a little toward finding a cure for IBS? I mean stuff that actively kills such as cancer and Ebola takes precedence of course, but I would love to have a social life that doesn't include excusing myself every 20 minutes to use the bathroom. Hell, I'll even be able to start dating again!
But knowing my luck nothing will ever move in that direction until my 30's or so after IBS ravaged whatever kind of happy life I could be having right now
Sigh
Aids and type 2 taken out
Time to throw a crazy party
