Recently I have decided to build my own PC I managed to get some parts together and get together the basics, The specs are as follows
OS
-Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Cpu
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
RAM
-4.0GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 375MHz
Graphics
-512MB GeForce GTS 250 (PNY)
HDD
-488GB Seagate ST3500418AS ATA Device
Motherboard
-ASRock K10N78FullHD-hSLI R3.0
The frame rates in most games are fine. (such as L4D2, CSS, Street Fighter 4 etc)
But the problem is, when playing TF2 usually the last point of a CP or Payload map the FPS will drop from 120 to around 15 making the game unplayable, Right now I have the money to upgrade something I'm just not sure what could be causing the lag any help would be appreciated.
My budget is £200
Do you have multi core rendering enabled in tf2? Also the only weak point in your computer is your cpu.

Yes, multi core rendering is enabled but I didn't see much of a performance increase with it on.

Disable it. It actually decreases performance in most cases.
When you have the money upgrade to an AM3/Intel equivalent system. Keep the GTS 250 though, it is still a nice card.

Will do
Have you tried this fix already?

It's not worth upgrading just for TF2, its performance can be kind of dodgy. Some people with top-end systems claim they're getting shit framerates, while others with systems slower than yours are running the game just fine. Then people complain that the updates are constantly making their framerates even worse, while others don't notice any difference.

Thanks, it has increased the normal FPS by 10 but still around capture points the game becomes unplayable.
I'm going to have to go with a new Processor.
What's the AA set to?
Source is one of the most CPU heavy engines there is. Trying to play TF2 in a 32 man server with a 6000+ is like committing suicide.

None

Yeah it seems I'm going to have to go with a new Processor, could anyone suggest a newer one?
Your MOBO is an AM2 socket so the highest you can get is this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103285&cm_re=amd_x4-_-19-103-285-_-Product

AM3 is backwards compatible. An AM3 CPU will work in an AM2 socket, but an AM2 CPU will not work in AN AM3 socket.
Ok, so I did a little looking around and found this:

But the only thing I am not sure about with this Processor is will it run slower on my AM2+ Motherboard?
buy a 955
Agree x1, the 965 is just slightly OC'ed
I have the athlon and it doesn't drop my performance like you were, but I don't have the same graphics card, so that might be why. Or I just don't notice.
It's an Athlon 64... There's a difference.
