Pirate Bay Uploader Faces $32m Lawsuit over UFC Sports Content
A New York online pirate who uploads live sporting events to torrent such as the Pirate Bay and Kickass Torrents is being sued for $32m (£19m).
Zuffia, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) pay-per-view cable channel which shows boxing and wrestling events, has launched a civil lawsuit against Steven Messina, 27, of Great Kills, Staten Island.
Messina is known online as "Secludedly" and numerous torrent files bear his name on the internet. On Kickass Torrents, he is considered to be a "verified uploader", meaning that the files he uploads are safe to download and do not contain malware or adware.
Another arbitrarily crafted sum of money in the name of "recovering lost profits".
Well, good luck UFC!
holy fucking overkill
Its like you know they want money but they'll never use their brains. How do you expect an average guy to even pay you that amount.

More like making an example out of him to scare others even though they make examples out of everyone they get and it's obviously not working.
This is so ridiculous that I don't know how to comment on it.
If I pay my entire month worth of salary to them every month, I would be done in ~450 years.
Something tells me they will never even get close to that amount.

You earn $3500ish per month? Congrats!
Well; his life is fucking ruined.
Well.. I'm not going to agree with that sum because it's absolutely colossal, but he had to expect something would happen after some time. No?
He got caught because he boasted somewhere that he was the best provider of MMA and boxing rips and he probably boasted on some place where he gave off enough private info to track either him or his pirate account down.
Guess he let it get into his head.

Loose lips sink ships.
Sue for money you'll never get. Great idea.
the great thing about these lawsuits is they tell me what companies I should never give money to
a successful lawsuit like this always seems like it'll incurr much more permanent damage than they'll ever hope to gain back//prevent from losing by scaring off other filesharers

They don't care about the money; the guy can never pay it and it's only 32 million which isn't much to the UFC. This is just to make an example, that's all.
Totally gonna pay that.
Because he just made so much money with your content, he can definitely pay it back.

The point isn't to get 32 mil, the point is to ruin his life and make an example of him. It's sick and fucked up.

So, what happens now?
(not counting the possibility of being jailed)
He'll probably settle in court. He might have to declare bankruptcy and have his wages garnished for the rest of his life.

I don't know if thats worse than jail or not. It sounds like it is, but then you get those messed up prisons...
Maybe he shouldn't have been illegally uploading copyrighted files to a torrent website then
Just a thought

Maybe he shouldn't have his life torn apart and ruined infront of his eyes because of something so utterly petty and insignificant
Just a thought, hm?

No. He was doing something illegal, and he got hit with the punishment for it. It's entirely, 100% his fault, and he could've stopped any time, but he didn't. He is in the wrong.

I don't think people object to him being punished as much as they do the ridiculous nature of said punishment. They pulled $32m out of their arse.

If he was made to pay back what he made out of it or something, sure but ruining someone's life for a relatively minor offense is just stupid.

You just say "the punishment" as if it's a fitting one.

its an absurd punishment, sure its illegal but 32 Million dollars for uploading fights online for free? thats insane
its akin to getting your hand chopped off for stealing food
I hate it when companies do this. Sure, it's illegal to infringe copyright and stuff - but this isn't profit recuperation, it's straight out 'make-an-example-of-ye' bullying.
If he lives another 40 years (which is pretty viable), he'd have to pay $44,444.44 a month to be debt fee by time of death.
That sucks.

he didn't kill a puppy with a spoon, he uploaded a few videos of pay per view events. This kind of shit is a miniscule chance to happen to you, so nobody ever takes the crazy lawsuits as a warning, just as a news story to feel sorry for as you continue doing stuff. Nobody has this shit coming and the punishment is worse for you than being robbed at gunpoint for what little's in your pocket every day for the rest of your life

people are arguing the magnitude of the punishment, not whether he should get punished or not
but I knew you knew that ;)
anyway they might as well send him to death row if they really wanna pursue the role of being evil

Just because something in unlawful doesn't mean it's wrong
