Promising Results from Finnish HIV Vaccination Tests

The Tampere-based Fit Biotech pharmaceutical company says promising results have been obtained from tests of an HIV vaccination it has been developing. According to the company, levels of the HIV virus have been reduced in patients for the first time by means of a vaccination treatment. Meanwhile, a record number of Finns have tested positive for HIV this year.
The effect of the vaccination lasts for about two years and offsets progression to full-blown AIDS for the same period.
Fit Biotech presented its findings at the international AIDS conference being held in Vienna. The findings came from trials on HIV positive patients treated with the vaccine in Johannesburg, South Africa. No of those inoculated had received any previous treatment for the virus.

Record Level of Finnish HIV Cases

The news comes as a record number of Finns have tested positive for HIV this year. So far, 109 new cases have been reported compared to last year’s total of 180.
According to Doctor Jussi Sutinen, a specialist at the Infections Clinic of the Helsinki University Central Hospital, ignorance is to blame. He says some young people do not take the rise of infection seriously enough.
Worldwide, the World Health Organization reported on Monday a total of 5.2 million people were receiving retroviral treatment for the HIV virus. Some 33 million people are infected with the virus across the world.
Nice to see that were taking major leaps towards curing this thing.
The problem with curing HIV is that it could mutate without anyone having a clue about it, so the awareness should not stop

Yes, but certain vaccines have done just that, prevent HIV from mutating by destroying infected cells. The only problem is the chance of cancer caused by the vaccine.

i'm aware of that, but it's not that simple to cure
viruses becoming resistant to vaccines are not unheard of

You have no idea what you're talking about.
Increased apoptosis leads to less cancers, not additional incidence, that's what the p53 pathway is supposed to do, kill abnormal cells. Protecting cells against death leads to additional malignancies. If these vaccines are mutagenic, that's a different story, but I've never heard any reports that they lead to increased incidences of any type of malignancy.
Man, HIV research is looking really promising right now, the new integrase inhibitors along with possibles cures is awesome.
that's what the p53 pathway is supposed to do, kill abnormal cells
p53 does not kill abnormal cells, it can only suppress it. cells that are already mutating usually are not effected by the protein

Shit, right. p53 is a suppressive factor, not a necrosis factor. Was thinking of the MAPK pathway/TNF-R1.
Actually, reading into it more, p53 can signal for apoptosis in already damaged cells, as well as repairing the DNA damage done.
Dem gays'll have sex all willy nilly now that they ain't got no AIDS to fear damn you science :bahgawd:
Hurray progress.

not if the cell itself does not respond due to mutation
it's common in the aggressive cancers

Yeah, obviously if p53 is mutated by whatever the stress was, it doesn't work.
Anyone wanna take bets on which Big Pharma corporation will gobble this up somehow and never let it see the light of day, like many other cures?

Except that doesn't happen.
Good try, though.

God damn, Xen, it's like we both sense the bullshit from a mile away.

It does though. You just never hear about it.
Something always seems to happen that results in cures for AIDS or something never being used. Either they fail clinical trials or they just sort of disappear from the public eye.
They certainly have motive for not wanting to cure cancer or AIDS, it's way more profitable to treat the symptoms rather than actually cure the disease for the guys that make the treatment drugs.

Maybe because they don't actually result in a cure, or their side effects are much worse than their benefits. Maybe they fail the clinical trials for a good reason, and disappear cause they're useless?
No, must be the goddamn FDA and the pharmoindustrial complex censoring the cures :tinfoil:

Because they don't work. That's why they fail them.
The pharma industry isn't one big cohesive unit, they're hugely competitive. There are companies that don't make HAART drugs who are working on AIDS vaccines. These companies have huge incentives to produce these things.
Hell, one form of cancer was almost completely cured, gaurdasil prevents HPV which accounts for almost all incidence of cervical carcinoma.
(Conflict of Interest disclaimer: I'm a biotech student and a member of the Parenteral Drug Association, but then again, this means I know what I'm talking about.)
I wish I got paid to defend these companies, it would make my life so much easier.

The sad thing is, this actually happens.

Like. What?
Point me to a single case where an actual, proven, with substantive backing, cure was rejected by the FDA.

No it doesn't
