Syrian refugees in Canada have been personally welcomed into the country at Vancouver airport by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, they have been welcomed by children in a video saying “see you in school,” and now they have been welcomed by Furries.
The fifth annual VancouFur convention, in which people dress up as fictional anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics, was held at the same hotel where a number of Syrian refugees are currently being housed.
A message was given to all attendees at the convention that the hotel had been chosen as one of the temporary housing locations for the Syrian refugees in Canada, and that “a major concern that VancouFur has is ensuring that each and every one of the refugees (and attendees) feels welcome and safe and the fact that this is likely to be a major shock to them”.
Haven't these people been through enough?!
Heard that the children liked to see the colourful "mascots" around the hotel. If that's the case, then I don't really think there's any problem.
I know people are going to make all kind of jokes (which is fine), but tbh, after all the shit the refugees have been through, this is the last of their concern.
parents probably thought they were just some dumb huggable mascots
Probably went better than the "Winter Wonder-Trans" convention I heard about on Howard Stern this morning. Or the Adult Baby convention a few weeks ago that they discussed.

There really wouldn't be a problem either way to be fair, all of these furry/anime/comic conventions allow children to attend in the first place so it's going to be more or less PG.
Kind of innocent, seeing as they probably don't watch e621 in the middle east.
New plan for defeating ISIS: send a battalion of furries over there and soon the hearts and minds of the natives and their offspring will be swayed.

Yes. And make a movie of it.
Man furries have been in the news quite a bit in the past week.

damn last thing you want is Furries and kids mixing together.
I'm off to a similar convention soon ish, though probably without the refugees
It's always nice to see stories like this other than all the hate
As much as a lot of us like to poke fun at furries (I admit to doing it) you can't deny that they do some good with charities, fundraisers, and stuff like this. This is probably something the kids will remember for years to come as their first memories into their new home. Good on ya furries.
Oh christ, I recognize some people. :suicide:
I feel like this would've been a bigger problem if the parents were aware that yiff is a thing.
Ignorance is bliss
imagine barely managing to escape a country forced under control by a massive terrorist group and then being suddenly surrounded by hundreds of people in fursuits trying to act like dogs\
not saying furries are bad but those refugees would at least be a little weirded out
What a fantastic way to integrate refugees into society, get them interested in a fandom.

Yeah, but I can think of worse introductions.

Absolutely horrifying.

Hmm...
This country's safe enough that people can dress up as dogs and be under no threat. Kids love it. Eh, I like it here already.
It's News like this that I wished the media would focus more on instead of the constant doom and gloom.

That's Canadian news for you.
I've gotten my news sources from American news networks for about a year now because of the election. One day I decide to watch Canadian News while making dinner and I was absolutely blown away by how peaceful everything felt.

No money to be made on good news.

The kids all probably have some exposure to cartoons from spending time in refugee camps/from before Syria got really shit so they'd likely just associate it with that.

I highly highly doubt any of the furries in Vancouver have ever had a T-72 barge in unannounced and cut loose with the coax gun.

It's because they save the tragedy and horror for their PSAs.
I personally am not a big fan of the whole furry thing, but I'm glad that those kids at least had some fun with it.

They did have a terrorist attack committed against a convention though, which absolutely could have been fatal to a large number of people had the attacker known more about the dispersal of chemical agents (Not furries in Vancouver, but furries as an international community)
Not the same, of course - but they do know a fair bit about being hated unconditionally.
