I am looking to buy a keyboard that really sounds and feels nice to type on. I have seen Das Keyboard, and I would love to have one, but it is a bit on the expensive side. Does anyone here know of any cheaper keyboard like it?
Buy an customized Intel Model M Keyboard. Search for it on google. It's expensive, but it's well made.
I would, and maby I am an idiot becuase I only preliminarily searched it, most of the older keyboards (Model M etc) have the horrible cream/off white colors, which I think are really ugly. I'll search more though.
What a coincidence, I myself just started hunting for a cheap model M. So far I'm looking at keyboards from www.clickykeyboards.com and I'm awaiting a reply from them about some questions.
For the horrible colored keys, you can take the keycap out and paint it. I've never actually tried it but I don't think there's anything wrong with painting the outside of it.
If you want the Cherry MX blue keyswitches, like the ones that are in the DAS keyboard there is a cheaper option: The Razer Blackwidow. Yes, it's a razer keyboard. It's only $79 and is widely available from common retailers (Razerzone.com, Newegg, Amazon, ect). Since Razer products show up in retail quite often, you may actually be able to try before you buy.

I just ordered one, or rather got my parents to order one for xmas. From what I can tell it seems to be the cheapest mechanical keyboard out there, and all the reviews say its built like a tank.
I regret not buying a model M I saw at a thrift store, for $5. :(

I have the grey/black one, it looks nice in real life. The pictures don't do it justice.

One year warranty on a $70 Razer product. Heh.
The Blackwidow would be better if the F keys weren't lightyears away from esc.

It would be better if Razer gave a shit about build quality, customer service and warranties.
Wow. I just got back, thanks for all the help guys!
Just realised I own a mechanical keyboard, a nice old one, gonna hook it up.
I have an old Apple keyboard from about 05. It looks mechanical. Not sure though.

That thing.
Pull a key off and look.

IIRC those things are rubber dome, and not that great quality either.
Turns out this is actually a membrane keyboard. Bloody nice to type on though.
I use a CLACK CLACK, Intel model M I found at a Salvation army thrift store.

It's garbage. Takes too much force to push down a key too. My PoS wireless Logitech EX100 from Wal-Mart works better.
Here is a interesting guide on the different types of mechanical keyboards.

those "intel model ms" are IBM, SGI, or Dell. just sayin
anyway, I use an AT101W, it's a great keyboard, is relatively easy to find, and has a quiet variant if you're a fag

Yup, mine is a IBM.
Right now I use the Apple Extended Keyboard (Alps keyswitches) with a Griffin iMate:

It's really nice to type on, though it isn't the prettiest thing out there due to yellowing and this coffee drip that must of been sitting there for a decade. The Griffin iMate is a bit annoying due to the numlock light staying on after I turn my PC off (I can fix it by unplugging the SVideo/ADB cable from the side of the keyboard and plugging it back in, but it's annoying).
I wonder if I could use my Commodore 64 as a keyboard now...
I'll out-retro your Apple keyboard.
I have one of those roll-up washable keyboards, because it's beer/vomit proof.
I think I'll get the spacesaver 104/105 from the unicomp store. If anyone here has it, can you comment on the quality of it?

You have a habit of vomiting on your keyboard?

Vodka + Green Skittles = Awesome vomit.
