Most Germans oppose a bigger role for their military in the world's trouble spots despite a push by the country's new defence minister, a poll released Friday indicated.
Asked whether they would support more deployments of Bundeswehr forces to crisis regions, 61 percent said "no" versus 30 percent who would back such moves, according to the poll for ARD public television.
The survey was conducted among 1,000 eligible voters from Monday to Wednesday.
Chancellor Angela Merkel's new defence chief Ursula von der Leyen said in an interview last weekend that Germany should engage more strongly in Africa by sending additional military trainers to Mali and supporting the French intervention in Central African Republic.
Asked by news weekly Der Spiegel whether Germany -- often criticised for its post-World War II reluctance to send troops abroad -- should boost its international military engagement, she said, "within the framework of our alliances, yes".
Most Americans are against US forces having a large international role. This doesn't stop the Pentagon from doing just that, though.
Hopefully the German people will get their way.

Well they actually have a functioning democracy.

Yes, the United States is clearly a military dictatorship. Sorry, I didn't get the memo. The problem in the US regarding the military doesn't derive from a lack of democracy. It derives from the fact that there are two lobbyists from defense contractors for every Congressperson.
Uh oh ze Germans are coming back
Yes, the United States is clearly a military dictatorship.
Well I didn't say that? The system is broken giving corporations and lobbyist too much power.
The two-party system is a big show which only fuction is to give people the illusion of choice.

All voters want lower energy prices.
Germany basically pays other countries to use their energy because we produce way to much.
Since we don't want to "waste" energy we Germans have to pay 0.24€ per kw/h while France (being only 20 km away from where i live) is paying 0.09€ per kw/h, and 0.06€ kw/h at night.
Our functioning democracy is ripping us of and nobody will do shit, they even said electricity will become even more expensive for us.
Germany doesn't need a large military. They're already close to European conquest by having every country in the EU owe them money

Which kinda kills democracy doesn't it?

You did prove yourself wrong. If defense contractor lobby can sway congressmen more than their voters then it isn't democracy at all.

Kinda closer to oligarchy or something.

Yeah but it's hardly a functioning democracy if it doesn't bend to the will of its people.

As far as I know yes, though I'm kinda doubt myself when he ends his posts with Winter Is Coming
is this a real post
He's either a moron or a troll who is dragging out their oh-so-brilliant joke or prank on for far too long i.e. a moron; practically all his posts are like that.
The thing about the US democracy is that you don't pick who you vote for. You pick the party lines and maybe this guy is different, but he really is just sort of watered down.
There's literally like 5 independents in all of congress because in some states they literally force you to be part of the 2 parties or else you can't be on the ballet.
I dont see why they would want a bigger millitary reach. In coparison, Denmark is one of the smallest countries in Europe but one of the most involved in international conflicts. Havent really made any difference to our home situation. At least none the public gets to know about. We spend billions fighting Talibans, but its not like the nation gets anything out of it.
A true humanitarian would say "but we are helping/liberating the oppressed peoples of the world", I just really dont see the point if that means letting shit fall apart at home.
61% of 1000 germans is most germans?
Not surprised they don't want a large international military role. I think I would be a bit sceptical after losing horrendously twice.

How do opinion polls work
Well they actually have a functioning democracy.
Trust me, if you'd live here you'd probably beg to differ this isnt related but not totally off topic but the Schoolsystem is totally fucked. and also Ursula von der Leyen was our Family Minister once now she's in the Fucking Defence ministry. Lets just hope she knows what shes doing.

You should put some thought into what quotes you use
The article says 30% for, 61% opposed.
Were the remaining 9% too busy having an early Oktoberfest to answer?
The last time Germany had an international presence... it didn't go so well.

You think that's the reason why independents and third parties are so weak here? Our entire electoral system screws them over, practically every single part of it. You wish it was just a few state constitutions.

Granted, I am a fan of george carlin. But when people make ridiculous conspiracy-theorist posts like this it ruins a thread.
