Labor, led by Daniel Andrews has taken back power from the Coalition in Victoria. Out-going premier Denis Napthine conceded defeat to Labor leader Daniel Andrews just before 10:00pm (AEDT). "I can tell you that I've just telephoned Daniel Andrews to advise Mr Andrews of my congratulations for Daniel Andrews and the Labor Party who've won this state election," Dr Napthine said. "I know there are still many pre-polls still to be counted. "I know there are still many postal votes still to be counted but the figures clearly indicate that there has been a swing to the Labor Party and they will have a majority in the legislative assembly. "Therefore, it's appropriate for myself as leader of the Government, as leader of the Liberal Party, to do the right thing by the people of Victoria and to contact Mr Andrews and inform him that I have conceded." The winning party needed at least 45 seats to form government. "We are giving the Coalition 36 seats, Labor 45 and we are giving the Greens two," ABC election analyst Antony Green said earlier. My seat went Liberal :( still a 3% swing in the ALP's favour, but it's pretty disappointing
I bet warning bells are ringing at the Liberal & National parties federal hq's. I have a feeling that while some states may retain a Liberal-National government (possibly Queensland), many others will return to Labor governments at each upcoming respective state elections in the short term. National unemployment is growing, high youth unemployment and living costs continually rise while wages have plateaued. Not to forget the lack of resolve on the Gonski reforms on national education Labor's main policies of jobs, education and healthcare are what got them across the line but may well be the straw that breaks the back of the camel if they fail to meet the objectives they have set themselves. Andrews must know that the amount of work to be done will be much more because there's more than just those main policy points, such as infrastructure, taxes, local-government co-operation, emergency services and a whole lot more.
The bookies knew something.
I kinda knew this was coming. The real weird shit is going down in the upper house right now. Greens, Shooters and Fishers, Country Alliance and DLP are all getting in on it.
Well it's not really surprising considering that Victoria is the most Labor-friendly State. It was bound to happen at some point.
