about 220 dollars, battery last 90 minutes, works with current vives, no affect on latency, works with multiple vives in a room.
Speaking to UploadVR in a phone interview, Graylin said that the experience would “greatly improve” the overall Vive experience, with no “noticeable difference” for factors like latency. The product will be available to pre-order with a standard battery, though Graylin said that a bigger battery will be sold eventually. We’re told the standard battery can deliver around one and a half hours of power. The bigger battery would rest in a user’s pocket.
HTC expects the device to be adopted by “avid” Vive users, though it could also be useful for businesses. Arcades, an area that the company is placing a big emphasis on of late, could have multiple Vive units without worrying about tangled wires and fewer tripping hazards, for example.

The kit is said to ship starting in Q1 2017. According to HTC, pre-orders go live at 7 a.m. Pacific on Friday
actually, they already sold out
I read in /r/vive that it added 15ms of latency, that sounds kinda high
Another 220 ontop of an already $800 product
No thanks. I'll wait till vive gen 2 or 3.

As if the motion sickness some people are getting already wasn't bad enough.
I read in /r/vive that it added 15ms of latency, that sounds kinda high
That seems to increase the frame delay between the computer and vive by about a frame or two on top of the existing 1-2 frame delay, then
Not perfect, but still usable if you don't make rapid sudden head movements, I'd imagine.

If you want cheap VR, PC VR isn't going to be particularly viable for a while
Top of the line hardware is always going to be expensive and PC VR is usually explained away by the fact that VR needs to get good before it gets cheap
The cord never really bothered me honestly
I read in /r/vive that it added 15ms of latency, that sounds kinda high
Really depends on what the current latency is, when I fly FPV with quadcopters and such, 15ms of latency would be amazing to have as the lag (assuming no latency beforehand) With FPV, it is usually a latency of 60ms+ when lag becomes noticeable and kind of uncomfortable (at least for racing and stuff). If the vive has a latency of 40ms or less, than this probably is a non-issue.
However, FPV is different from vive's VR, and there might be different considerations, as well as the cost. $1200 total for what amounts to a really cool accessory for my PC is still a bit steep.
Holy shit, Gen 2's are going to be wireless :v:
Good to see them already working to solve one of the biggest issues just 7 months after release, makes me hopeful for future versions

For a first generation add-on, this is a screaming deal. Wireless is massive
Wireless is massive
not if the latency or battery pack are shit. I'd rather deal with the cable (which is never a big deal, always seems people who've never used vive are the most vocal about how bad it might be) than dump 200 bucks for an inferior experience with the rest of the headset
I haven't tried the Vive, but considering my reaction time is already slow at around 300ms, a 15ms + vives own latency wouldn't probably bother me much.
Seems like a nice way to expand the VR actually, cables may have been a limiting factor for many and when you have money for a premium like VR, the extra cost shouldn't bother you.
Baby steps guys.
These things will improve with time
As if the motion sickness some people are getting already wasn't bad enough.
Motion sickness on the rift or vive is virtually non-existent when you meet recommended specs, the only games that have made me even the slightest bit sick was due to me choosing a movement scheme option that's harsher on you but some people enjoy more. Even then, it was very minor.
I feel the need to correct here;
[del]Its not official, as in: HTC did not fund or help develop this product. They're just selling it on their marketplace.[/del]
Okay, appears they might have helped through the Vive X Accelerator program
They did however buy/invest a significant sum of money in Quark VR who are also trying to make the vive wireless. That thing is still under development.
Wow! They certainly get things done quickly.
Good for them.

one of the best things about it, that it's an addon and not a feature relegated to another model.

honestly guys the cord really isn't that big of a deal. im not sure you'll find anyone who has a vive who has massive grievances with the cord.

That goes without saying, a bad product is a bad product. But any progress towards wireless is very welcome, and if $200 remains a price point for wireless ability as an add-on, that's pretty wonderful. If they can ship a passable or even mediocre unit right now, it means hopefully we're on a path for proper wireless much sooner than we thought.

Gen 2 or 3 won't be any cheaper, It'll just be more cutting edge.
Also expect staggered releases, the gen 2 lighthouses are up next, then we'll see them ship gen 2 controllers, then we might finally see a gen 2 HMD.

TBH, if you're interested in the future of VR at all, grab a Vive and just upgrade it as the new hardware comes out for it.

I see no problems here.

I mean, when I see a video of two people trying to play Ping Pong in VR, then one person steps on the cord of the other which causes them to fall and take the $800 headset with them, it's a pretty big issue as far as longevity goes.
I don't see the issue with the price. It's price is perfectly reasonable for what it is. I don't understand what people are complaining about, I mean people don't winge because a high end laptop is out of their price range, just try it out and save up if you like it.

I'd rather have a battery pack that lasts for +10 hours on my back

High latency, 1,5 hours of playtime
I read in /r/vive that it added 15ms of latency, that sounds kinda high
are there any wireless technologies that don't add latency? (serious question)
I'd love to try these, but knowing me I'd need the best of the best equipment to not get sick as fuck 2 minutes in.
I'd rather have a battery pack that lasts for +10 hours on my back
That's what will probably happen, we'll see a backpack power source maybe first party, certainly third party. The vive just plugs right in at the unit.
are there any wireless technologies that don't add latency? (serious question)
No, but they're working on getting it extremely low, iirc Valve has gotten it down to 10ms additional latency. Which is good, but still almost double the baseline 11 ms.
That seems really amazing.
I haven't had a huge issue with the cables, but sometimes it does take some adjusting if you turn around too much and having to uncoil the cable or watch out so you dont trip over it etc.
As long as it isn't a too big quality loss having it be wireless, I am very likely to buy this accessory!
What a time to be alive.
are there any wireless technologies that don't add latency? (serious question)
Wireless tech isn't necessarily much slower than wired, the problem lies in the fact you need to compress the stream to meet bandwidth requirements. VR image bandwidth is only going to increase.

Why are people still acting appalled by the price of top of the line hardware lmao
Why are people still acting appalled by the price of top of the line hardware lmao
Because this is the future of gaming and its locked away behind huge prices.
Because this is the future of gaming and its locked away behind huge prices.
Its also top of the line and brand new. Would you be surprised that a new Titan card is $1,000????
[editline]12th November 2016[/editline]
I mean, the first cellphone was like, $4,000. Meanwhile, India has a smartphone that is now $1. It'll decrease over time. Brand new techology is always expensive as balls
